Nanostructured silicon (na-Si:H) thin films were fabricated using plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD) technique under high silane hydrogen dilution and a discharge frequency of 27 MHz, where the substrate was located in the dark region of the plasma, protected by a grounded metal grid. By not exposing the growth surface directly to the plasma we avoid the silicon growth surface to sustain a high ion bombardment leading to a less defective surface and highly compact films. The intrinsic films grown under these conditions were used to produce the channel region of thin film transistors (TFTs) with a bottom gate staggered configuration, integrating different dielectric layers. The devices produced exhibit a field effect mobility close to 1.84 cm 2 V -1S -1, threshold voltage around 2 V, on/off ratio above 10 7 and sub-threshold slope below 0.5 V/decade, depending on the dielectric used. A novel flexible tripodal ligand derived from 3-methylindole, ("InTREN" L), and its mononuclear Zn(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), Hg(II) and Pd(II) complexes are described. All compounds gave analytically pure solid samples. Characterisation of the compounds was accomplished by (1)H NMR, IR and absorption spectroscopies, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) and elemental analysis and their geometry optimized using density functional theory (DFT).Time-dependent-density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations have been used to assign the lowest energy absorption bands of the free ligand and the Zn(II) complex. The system is a very good candidate for in situ recognition/coordination effects by MALDI-TOF-MS spectrometry and absorption spectroscopy. The presence of three indole groups in InTREN opens up the possibility to synthesize new three-dimensional self-assembly supramolecular structures. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Stegosaurian dinosaurs have a quadrupedal stance, short forelimbs, short necks, and are generally considered to be low browsers. A new stegosaur, Miragaia longicollum gen. et sp. nov., from the Late Jurassic of Portugal, has a neck comprising at least 17 cervical vertebrae. This is eight additional cervical vertebrae when compared with the ancestral condition seen in basal ornithischians such as Scutellosaurus.
Miragaia has a higher cervical count than most of the iconically long-necked sauropod dinosaurs. Long neck length has been achieved by ‘cervicalization’ of anterior dorsal vertebrae and probable lengthening of centra. All these anatomical features are evolutionarily convergent with those exhibited in the necks of
sauropod dinosaurs. Miragaia longicollum is based upon a partial articulated skeleton, and includes the only known cranial remains from any European stegosaur. A well-resolved phylogeny supports a new clade that unites Miragaia and Dacentrurus as the sister group to Stegosaurus; this new topology challenges the common view of Dacentrurus as a basal stegosaur.

NEW SPECIMENS OF ANGOLASAURUS BOCAGEI AND COMMENTS ON THE EARLY RADIATIONS OF PLIOPLATECARPINE MOSASAURS POLCYN, Michael, SMU, Dallas, TX, USA; JACOBS, Louis, SMU, Dallas, TX, USA; MATEUS, Octávio, Museu da Lourinhã, Lourinhã, Portugal; SCHULP, Anne, Natuurhistorisch Museum Maastricht, Maastricht, Netherlands New, well preserved material of the Turonian mosasaur Angolasaurus bocagei from the Tadi Beds of the Itombe Formation in northern Angola, allows detailed redescription of its morphology and reassessment of its phylogenetic relationships. Angolasaurus had been previously referred to the genus Platecarpus; however, phylogenetic analysis confirms the valid taxonomic status of A. bocagei, and reconstructs that taxon within a clade that also includes the genera Selmasaurus and Ectenosaurus. These forms are united by an elaborated infrastapedial process of the quadrate and a unique ridge-like descending process of the parietal forming the supraoccipital articulation, but also retain a relatively plesiomorphic configuration of the braincase. That clade is united with all other plioplatecarpines by a number of derived characters including the presence of a novel basicranial circulation pattern. In Africa, North and South America, early plioplatecarpines are known by the Middle Turonian and Angolasaurus and closely related forms appear by the Upper Turonian. Selmasaurus and Ectenosaurus are a rare faunal component of the Santonian and Campanian of North America. Platecarpus planifrons appears in the Coniacian of North America and represents the plesiomorphic condition of the clade containing the remaining species of Platecarpus and Plioplatecarpus, that appears in the Santonian and persist until the end of the Cretaceous, reaching global distribution. The temporal and geographic distribution of these radiations suggest influence of paleogeography and eustatic sea levels.

The aim of the present communication is to present an analysis of the gravity load influence on the hysteretic behaviour of a beam-column connection. For this purpose, in the experimental campaign a new procedure for RC cyclic tests is presented in order to reproduce closer demands on the beam critical zone than the traditional procedures. The Experimental campaign included cyclic tests of the specimens according with the ECCS recommendation and an innovate procedure. The test results are presented, compared and analysed. A numerical simulation of the tests is presented where the model for the hysteretic response of the beam was calibrated with the experimental results. Finally, the behaviour of a portal frame system under cyclic displacements up to a drift of 3.5% was analysed, assuming that the non-linearity is concentrated on the plastic hinges, considering different levels of gravity load. Thus it is intended to assess the influence of the gravity load on the behaviour of a structure subjected to cyclic loads.

This document describes a work-in-progress development of NGen-VM, a distributed infrastructure that manages execution environments with run-time and programming language support targeting applications developed in the Java programming language, deployed over clusters of many-core computers. For each running application or suite of related applications, a dedicated single-system image will be provided, regardless of the concurrent threads running on a single machine (on several cores) or scattered on different computers. Such system images rely on a single model for concurrency management (Transactional Shared Memory Model), in order fill the gap between the hardware infrastructure of clusters of many-core nodes and the application runtime that is independent from that hardware infrastructure. Interactions between threads in the same tasks will be supported by a Transactional Memory framework that provides the programming language with Atomic and Isolated code regions. Interactions between thread on different machines will also use the Transactional Memory model, but now resorting to a Distributed Shared Memory abstraction.

This paper reports the performance of small area solar cells, 128 linear integrated position sensitive detector arrays and thin film transistors based on nanostructured silicon thin films produced by plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition technique, close to the onset of dusty plasma conditions, within the transition region from amorphous to microcrystalline. The small area solar cells, produced in a modified single chamber reactor, exhibited very good electrical characteristics with a conversion efficiency exceeding 9%. The 128 integrated position sensitive detector arrays, based on a similar pin structure, allow real-time 3D object imaging with a resolution higher than 90 l p/mm. The thin film transistors produced exhibited field effect mobility of 2.47 cm 2/V/s, threshold voltage of 2 V, on/off ratio larger than 10 7 and sub-threshold slopes of 0.32 V/decade, which are amongst the best results reported for this type of device. © 2009 Taylor & Francis.
