Proceedings of the Fourth conference on Hot topics in system dependability. HotDep’08. Berkeley, CA, USA: USENIX Association, 2008. 9. Abstract
Database systems are a key component behind many of today’s computer systems. As a consequence, it is crucial that database systems provide correct and continuous service despite unpredictable circumstances, such as software bugs or attacks. This paper presents the design of Byzantium, a Byzantine fault-tolerant database replication middleware that provides snapshot isolation (SI) semantics. SI is very popular because it allows increased concurrency when compared to serializability, while providing similar behavior for typical workloads. Thus, Byzantium improves on existing proposals by allowing increased concurrency and not relying on any centralized component. Our middleware can be used with off-the-shelf database systems and it is built on top of an existing BFT library.

Sauropod dinosaurs were the largest animals ever to inhabit the land, with truly gigantic forms in at least three lineages1, 2, 3. Small species with an adult body mass less than five tonnes are very rare4, 5, and small sauropod bones generally represent juveniles. Here we describe a new diminutive species of basal macronarian sauropod, Europasaurus holgeri gen. et sp. nov., and on the basis of bone histology we show it to have been a dwarf species. The fossils, including excellent skull material, come from Kimmeridgian marine beds of northern Germany6, 7, and record more than 11 individuals of sauropods 1.7 to 6.2 m in total body length. Morphological overlap between partial skeletons and isolated bones links all material to the same new taxon. Cortical histology of femora and tibiae indicates that size differences within the specimens are due to different ontogenetic stages, from juveniles to fully grown individuals. The little dinosaurs must have lived on one of the large islands around the Lower Saxony basin8. Comparison with the long-bone histology of large-bodied sauropods suggests that the island dwarf species evolved through a decrease in growth rate from its larger ancestor.

Chastre Rodrigues, C., and M. A. G. Silva The behaviour of RC columns retrofitted with FRP or polymeric concrete under axial compression and cyclic horizontal loads. Eds. Ong Tan W. X. K. C. G. Ren. 9th International Conference on Inspection, Appraisal, Repairs and Maintenance of Structures. Fuzhou, PEOPLES R CHINA: Ci-Premier Pte Ltd, 2005. Abstract

The seismic retrofit of reinforced concrete columns with FRP jackets has received a considerable increment in recent years due the high strength-weight and stiffness-weight ratios of FRP compared to other materials. The FRP outer shell also contributes to prevent or delay environmental degradation of the concrete and corrosion of the steel reinforcement. An experimental program conducted in order to analyze the behavior of reinforced concrete columns jacketed with FRP composites or repaired with polymeric concrete and subjected to axial compression and cyclic horizontal loads is described. The dimensions of the cylindrical columns were 1500 mm height by 250 mm diameter. The influence of various parameters on the response, including the type of confining material and the number of FRP layers, is reported. The results of the tests are shown and interpreted.

Gomes, M.Ivette, Frederico Caeiro, and Fernanda Figueiredo. "Bias reduction of a tail index estimator through an external estimation of the second-order parameter." Statistics. 38 (2004): 497-510. Abstract

{Summary: We first consider a class of consistent semi-parametric estimators of a positive tail index $\gamma$, parametrised in a tuning or control parameter $\alpha$. Such a control parameter enables us to have access for any available sample, to an estimator of the tail index $\gamma$ with a null dominant component of asymptotic bias and consequently with a reasonably flat mean squared error pattern, as a function of $k$, the number of top-order statistics considered.\par Such a control parameter depends on a second-order parameter $\rho$, which will be adequately estimated so that we may achieve a high efficiency relative to the classical Hill estimator [ıt B. M. Hill}, Ann. Stat. 3, 1163–1174 (1975; Zbl 0323.62033)] provided we use a number of top-order statistics larger than the one usually required for the estimation through the Hill estimator. An illustration of the behaviour of the estimators is provided, through the analysis of the daily log-returns on the Euro-US\$ exchange rates.}

This work reports a technique to obtain electronic grade intrinsic amorphous silicon using the plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition technique at 13.56 MHz. The batch processing method consists of igniting the plasma process through a neutral gas such as hydrogen or helium and only feeding the carrier gas containing the species to be decomposed into the reactor when the plasma is stabilized. By doing so, no surface damage is induced in the first deposited layers and so a more compacted and stable film is produced, compared to amorphous films grown by conventional methods. The best deposition conditions to produce films with good transport properties for optoelectronic applications are: temperature ≈ 473 K, 60 < pressure 87 Pa, power density of 32 mW/cm2 and flow of silane ≈ 10 sccm. The growth rate and the microstructure factor are 1.5 Å/s and 3.3×10-2, respectively, while the activation energy ≈ 0.8 eV; dark conductivity at room temperature ≈ 4.37×10-10 (ωcm)-1; photosensiti-vity ≈ 5.02×l06; density of states ≈ 6.6×1015 cm-3; bonded hydrogen concentration ≈ 20 at% and optical band gap ≈ 1.75 eV.

The paper reports on numerical simulation of impact problems on fiber reinforced plastic composite laminated plates reinforced with Kevlar 29. The ballistic impact caused by STANAG-2920 projectile is analyzed to obtain an estimate for the V50 and the global damage. All estimate have been carried out using the finite difference numerical code AUTODYN-3D, are compared with the experimental data to illustrate the performance of the simulation. Good correlation between resulting simulations and experimental results is demonstrated both in terms of deformation and damage of the laminates and ballistic performance.

Co-combustion tests of dry sewage sludges with coal were performed in a pilot bubbling FBC aiming at the characterization of ashes and determining the behaviour of heavy metals in the process. The tests showed compliance with the regulatory levels as far as heavy metal emissions were concerned. The bottom ashes, which accounted for about 70% of the total ash production, were obtained in a granular form, with diameters ranging from 0.5 to 4 mm. The heavy metals were distributed in ashes obtained from different locations of the installation and their concentrations were found to vary depending on the location of capture. The increase in heavy metals content in bottom ashes was not found to lead to higher leachability and ecotoxicity compared to sewage sludges, suggesting that there could be opportunities for their further use. Mercury suffered vaporisation inside the reactor, thus leaving bottom ashes free of contamination by it. However, there was observed a strong retention of mercury in cyclone ashes due to the presence of unburned carbon which probably acted as an adsorbent. The effluent mercury was also found to be mostly associated with the particulate fraction, being less than 20% emitted in gaseous forms. The results suggested that the combustion of the sewage sludge could successfully be carried out and the amount of unburned carbon leaving the combustor but captured in cyclone was large enough to ensure substantial retention of mercury at low temperatures, hence could contribute to an improvement of the mercury release which still remains an issue of great concern to resolve during combustion of waste materials.
