The degradation mechanisms of bonded joints between CFRP laminates and steel substrates under severe environmental conditions require more durability data and studies to increase the database and better understand their causes. Studies on bond properties of double-strap CFRP-to-steel bonded joints with two different composite materials as well as adhesive coupons subjected to freeze-thaw cycles for 10,000 h were conducted to reduce that gap. In addition, the equivalent to the number of thermal cycles and their slips induced in the CFRP laminates was replicated by an equivalent (mechanical) loading-unloading history condition imposed by a static tensile machine. The mechanical properties of the adhesive coupons and the strength capacity of the bonded joints were only slightly changed by the artificial aging. It was confirmed that the interfacial bond strength between CFRP and adhesive is critically related to the maximum shear stress and failure mode. The interfacial bond strength between adhesive and steel degraded with the aging. However, the equivalent thermal cyclic bond stress caused no detectable damage on the bond because only the interfacial elastic regime was actually mobilized, which confirmed that pure thermal cycles aging, per se, at the level imposed, have a low impact on the degradation of CFRP-to-steel bonded joints.

Abstract An experimental work on reinforced concrete flat slab specimens to test the efficiency of postinstalled bolts, as punching shear reinforcement in resisting vertical and cyclic horizontal loads, was conducted and is presented in this paper. The test protocol consisted in increasing horizontal drifts combined with constant vertical load until failure. Two different detailing solutions for the shear reinforcement were considered, one using a radial distribution around the column and another using a cross distribution, being the results compared with a previously tested reference specimen. The dimensions of the specimens were 4.25 x 1.85 x 0.15 m3. The test setup used for these tests was developed by the research team and simulates the boundary conditions with already recognized good results. Postinstalled steel bolts were proven to be an efficient solution for strengthening of existing structures, improving the structural behavior, and the punching resistance.

The current research aims to study the behavior of thin reinforced concrete (RC) slabs under concentrated loads as well as to investigate the application of Critical Shear Crack Theory (CSCT) to such slabs. For this purpose, four square 100-mm-thick slabs were cast and subjected to concentrated punching monotonic loading. The experimental parameters were the flexural reinforcement ratio, 0.38% and 1.00%, and the presence or absence of shear headed stud reinforcement. It is shown that the failure criteria of CSCT describe reasonably well the observed failure modes and the ultimate loads of the specimens. However, attention is brought to some peculiarities in the analytical derivation of the load-rotation curve for thin lightly reinforced flat slabs, in which large deformations are experienced. Results showed that in such slabs, the behavior can be highly influenced by the post-yield stress-strain curve of the flexural steel reinforcement. As a result, the constitutive law of steel reinforcement should be explicitly taken into account in such cases. The versatility of CSCT to adapt to these conditions is demonstrated.

tInspired by chitin based hierarchical structures observed in arthropods exoskeleton, this work reportsthe capturing of chitin nanowhiskers’ chiral nematic order into a chitosan matrix. For this purpose, highlycrystalline chitin nanowhiskers (CTNW) with spindle-like morphology and average aspect ratio of 24.9were produced by acid hydrolysis of chitin. CTNW were uniformly dispersed at different concentrationsin aqueous suspensions. The suspensions liquid crystalline phase domain was determined by rheologicalmeasurements and polarized optical microscopy (POM). Chitosan (CS) was added to the CTNW isotropic,biphasic and anisotropic suspensions and the solvent was evaporated to allow films formation. The Films’morphologies as well as the mechanical properties were explored. A correlation between experimentalresults and a theoretical model, for layered matrix’ structures with fibers acting as a reinforcement agent,was established. The results evidence the existence of two different layered structures, one formed bychitosan layers induced by the presence of chitin and another formed by chitin nanowhiskers layers.By playing on the ratio chitin/chitosan one layered structure or the other can be obtained allowing thetunning of materials’ mechanical properties.

This book is devoted to denitrification, an anaerobic process that is used by a wide range of bacteria for energy generation. The overall process involves nitrate, which is present in soil or water, being reduced to gaseous dinitrogen. This initial chapter aims to place denitrification in the larger context of the nitrogen biogeochemical cycle (a bird’s eye view). Detailed topics are developed through the many following contributions. Denitrification is a landscape for probing the structures, functions and mechanisms of action of a wide range of highly specialised metalloenzymes. These carry out, sequentially, four oxo-transfer reactions: NO3 → NO2˙NO → N2O → N2. The environmental implications of these processes are of particular relevance. Nitrate accumulation and the release of nitrous oxide into the atmosphere due to the excessive use of fertilisers in agriculture are examples of two environmental problems in which denitrification plays a central role.

In this paper, we address the solution of the symmetric eigenvalue complementarity problem (EiCP) by treating an equivalent reformulation of finding a stationary point of a fractional quadratic program on the unit simplex. The spectral projected-gradient (SPG) method has been recommended to this optimization problem when the dimension of the symmetric EiCP is large and the accuracy of the solution is not a very important issue. We suggest a new algorithm which combines elements from the SPG method and the block active set method, where the latter was originally designed for box constrained quadratic programs. In the new algorithm the projection onto the unit simplex in the SPG method is replaced by the much cheaper projection onto a box. This can be of particular advantage for large and sparse symmetric EiCPs. Global convergence to a solution of the symmetric EiCP is established. Computational experience with medium and large symmetric EiCPs is reported to illustrate the efficacy and efficiency of the new algorithm.
