n this extended abstract we present a bidirectional model-driven framework to develop spreadsheets. By being model driven, our approach allows to evolve a spreadsheet model and automatically have the data co-evolved. The bidirectional component achieves precisely the inverse, that is, to evolve the data and automatically obtain a new model to which the data conforms.

Spreadsheets play an important role in software organizations. Indeed, in large software organizations, spreadsheets are not only used to define sheets containing data and formulas, but also to collect information from different systems, to adapt data coming from one system to the format required by another, to perform operations to enrich or simplify data, etc. In fact, over time many spreadsheets turn out to be used for storing and processing increasing amounts of data and supporting increasing numbers of users. Unfortunately, spreadsheet systems provide poor support for modularity, abstraction, and transformation, thus, making the maintenance, update and evolution of spreadsheets a very complex and error-prone task. We present techniques for model-driven spreadsheet engineering where we employ bidirectional transformations to maintain spreadsheet models and instances synchronized. In our setting, the business logic of spreadsheets is defined by ClassSheet models to which the spreadsheet data conforms, and spreadsheet users may evolve both the model and the data instances. Our techniques are implemented as part of the MDSheet framework: an extension for a traditional spreadsheet system.

Biocompatible and biodegradable water-soluble dendrimers comprising ureas within the interior and amino groups on the periphery were synthesized in supercritical carbon dioxide (dendrimer of generation 1 shown in picture). This novel class of dendrimers shows a pH-dependent intrinsic blue fluorescence at very low concentrations, which makes them potential polymeric fluorescent cell markers.

"Basic analog circuits with a-GIZO thin-film transistors: Modeling and simulation." 2012 International Conference on Synthesis, Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Methods and Applications to Circuit Design, SMACD 2012. 2012. 261-264. Abstract

This paper addresses a modeling and simulation methodology for analog circuit design with amorphous-GIZO thin-film transistors (TFTs). To reach an effective circuit design flow, with commercially available tools, a TFT model has been first developed with an artificial neural network (ANN). Multilayer perceptron with backpropagation algorithm has been adopted to model the static behavior of the TFT devices, for different aspect ratios. The model was then implemented in Verilog-A, to allow a quick instantiation in circuit. Simulations using Cadence Spectre are performed to validate the model. On a second phase, simulation results of basic analog circuits, with this ANN model, are verified against the actual functional results, namely an adder, subtractor, and current mirror circuit. Results demonstrate not only the ANN model accuracy and compatibility with dc and transient analysis, but also show the a-GIZO TFT capability to perform analog operations. © 2012 IEEE.

Saturation Transfer Difference-NMR (STD-NMR) spectroscopy has emerged as a powerful screening tool and a straightforward way to study the binding epitopes of active compounds in early stage lead discovery in pharmaceutical research. Here we report the application of STD NMR to characterize the binding of the anti-inflammatory drugs ibuprofen, diclofenac and ketorolac to COX-1 and COX-2. Using well-studied COX inhibitors and by comparing STD signals with crystallographic structures we show that there is a relation between the orientations of ibuprofen and diclofenac in the COX-2 active site and the relative STD responses detected in the NMR experiments. Based on this analysis we propose that ketorolac should bind to the COX-2 active site in similar orientation as that of diclofenac. We also show that the combination of STD NMR with competition experiments constitutes a valuable tool to address the recently proposed behavior of COX-2 as functional heterodimers and complement enzyme activity studies in the effort to rationalize COX inhibition mechanisms.

Fernandes, Vítor H., and Teresa M. Quinteiro. "Bilateral semidirect product decompositions of transformation monoids." Semigroup Forum. 82 (2011): 271-287. Abstract
Summary: In this paper we consider the monoid $\mathcal {OR}_{n}$ of all full transformations on a chain with $n$ elements that preserve or reverse the orientation, as well as its submonoids $\mathcal {OD}_{n}$ of all order-preserving or order-reversing elements, $\mathcal {OP}_{n}$ of all orientation-preserving elements and $\mathcal {O}_{n}$ of all order-preserving elements. By making use of some well known presentations, we show that each of these four monoids is a quotient of a bilateral semidirect product of two of its remarkable submonoids.
