The increasing demand in automation processes in finishing techniques also calls for automatic measurement and inspection methods. These methods ought to be installed as close as possible to the production process and they ought to measure the values needed in a safe and fast way, without disturbing the process itself. Simultaneously they should be free of wear and insensitive against mechanical perturbations. This approach can be reached by proper combination of the laser triangulation technique with an array of linear position sensitive detectors, able to supply information about the surface finishing of an object. This is the aim of this paper that envisages to present experimental results of the performances exhibited by such an array constituting 128 elements. The analogue information supplied by this array is processed by an analogue/digital converter, directly coupled to the array and whose information is computer processed, concerning the recognition of patterns and the processing of information collected over the object to be inspected. © 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. Malik, A., Nunes Martins R. R. "Cubic to hexagonal phase transition in spray deposited tin-doped indium oxide films." Materials Research Society Symposium - Proceedings. Vol. 481. 1998. 599-605. Abstract

This work's aim is to report for the first time the cubic to hexagonal phase transition in tin-doped In2O3 films with a Sn/In atomic ratio of 0.03, fabricated at low temperature and normal pressure from alcoholic solution of InCl3 and SnCl4. The performed X-ray diffraction measurements show a difference between crystallographic symmetry of thin (100 nm) and thick (400 nm) films prepared in the same conditions: the structure of thick films can be related to high pressure In2O3 hexagonal system with a preferred orientation of c-axis parallel to the substrate surface, while thin films present a cubic symmetry with columnar (400) grain orientation. Phase transition nature is connected with non-axial tensile deformation of indium oxide grid due to insertion of chlorine ions in the position of two diagonally opposite oxygen vacancies in In2O3 network.

Several well preserved clutches of dinosaurs have been discovered in the upper Kimmeridgian/ Tithonian of Lourinhã (Estramadur Province, Portugal). Some eggs of one clutch contained embryo elements of a theropod dinosaur. The egg-shell resembles that of eggs which have been discovered in the Upper Jurassic of Colorado

"Crystal structure of acidic seminal fluid protein (aSFP) at 1.9 angstrom resolution: a bovine polypeptide of the spermadhesin family." Journal of Molecular Biology. 274 (1997): 650-660. Abstract

We report the three-dimensional crystal structure of acidic seminal fluid protein (aSFP), a 12.9 kDa poly-peptide of the spermadhesin family isolated from bovine seminal plasma, solved by the multiple isomorphous replacement method and refined with data to 1.9 Angstrom resolution with a final R-factor of 17.3%. aSFP is built by a single CUB domain architecture, a 100 to 110 amino-acid-residue extracellular module found in 16 functionally diverse proteins. The structure of aSFP reveals that the CUB domain displays a beta-sandwich topology organised into two 5-stranded beta-sheets, each of which contain two parallel and four antiparallel strands. The structure of aSFP is almost identical to that of porcine spermadhesins PSP-I and PSP-II, which in turn show limited structural similarity with jellyroll topologies of certain virus capsid proteins. Essentially, topologically conserved residues in these proteins are those internal amino acids forming the hydrophobic core of the CUB and the jellyroll domains, suggesting their importance in maintaining the integrity of these protein folds, On the other hand, the structure of aSFP shows structural features that are unique to this protein and which may provide a structural ground for understanding the distinct biological properties of different members of the spermadhesin protein family. Spermadhesins, 12,000-14,000 M-r mammalian proteins, include lectins involved in sperm-egg binding and display a single CUB domain architecture. We report the crystal structures of porcine seminal plasma PSP-I/PSP-II, a heterodimer of two glycosylated spermadhesins. and bovine aSFP at 2.4 Angstrom and 1.9 Angstrom resolution respectively.

"Crystallization and preliminary x-ray diffraction studies of aSFP, a bovine seminal plasma protein with a single CUB domain architecture." Protein Science. 6 (1997): 725-727. Abstract

{Bovine acidic seminal fluid protein (aSFP) is a 12.9 kDa polypeptide of the spermadhesin family built by a single CUB domain architecture. The CUB domain is an extracellular module present in 16 functionally diverse proteins. To determine the three-dimensional structure of aSFP, the protein was crystallized at 21 degrees C by vapor diffusion in hanging drops, using ammonium sulfate, pH 4.7, and polyethyleneglycol 4000 as precipitants, containing 10% dioxane to avoid the formation of clustered crystals. Elongated prismatic crystals with maximal size of 0.6 x 0.3 x 0.2 mm(3) diffract to beyond 1.9 Angstrom resolution and belong to space group P2(1)2(1)2, with cell parameters a = 52.4 Angstrom

"Characterization of representative enzymes from a sulfate reducing bacterium implicated in the corrosion of steel." BIOCHEMICAL AND BIOPHYSICAL RESEARCH COMMUNICATIONS. 221 (1996): 414-421. Abstract
This communication reports the isolation, purification and characterization of key enzymes involved in dissimilatory sulfate reduction of a sulfate reducing bacterium classified as Desulfovibrio desulfuricans subspecies desulfuricans New Jersey (NCIMB 8313) (Ddd NJ). The chosen strain, originally recovered from a corroding cast iron heat exchanger, was grown in large scale batch cultures. Physico-chemical and spectroscopic studies of the purified enzymes were carried out. These analyses revealed a high degree of similarity between proteins isolated from the DddNJ strain and the homologous proteins obtained from Desulfomicrobium baculatus Norway 4. In view of the results obtained, taxonomic reclassification of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans subspecies desulfuricans New Jersey (NCIMB 8313) into Desulfomicrobium baculatus (New Jersey) is proposed. Wide band gap microcrystalline silicon films have aroused considerable interest since they combine some electro-optical advantages of amorphous and crystalline materials highly important to produce electro-optical devices such as TFTs and solar cells. In this paper we present results concerning the electro-optical characteristics of highly transparent and conductive n-type μc-Si based films. Here, emphasis is given to the production of n-type μc-films with optical gaps of 2.3 eV and dark conductivity's of 6.5 Scm-1.
