[M(CpBz)(CO)3CH3] (M=Mo, 2a, W, 2b; CpBz=C5(CH2Ph)5) have been prepared and reacted with PCl5 and PhI · Cl2. Depending on the metal and on the chlorinating reagent used [Mo(CpBz) ($η$2-COCH3)Cl3], 3, [W(CpBz)Cl4], 4, [Mo(CpBz)(CO)3Cl], 5 and [Mo(CpBz)Cl4], 6 have been obtained. The molecular structures of all compounds are reported and two conformations have been characterised for the benzyl substituents. In complexes 2a, 2b and 5 one phenyl ring bends towards the metals while in 3 and 4 the five phenyls point opposite to the metals. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Crystals of cytochrome c peroxidase from Pseudomonas stutzeri were obtained using sodium citrate and PEG 8000 as precipitants. A complete data set was collected to a resolution of 1.6 A under cryogenic conditions using synchrotron radiation at the ESRF. The crystals belong to space group P2(1), with unit-cell parameters a = 69.29, b = 143.31, c = 76.83 A, beta = 100.78 degrees. Four CCP molecules were found in the asymmetric unit, corresponding to a pair of dimers related by local dyads. The crystal packing in the structure shows that the functional dimers can dimerize, as suggested by previous biochemical studies.

Singular Integral Operators, Factorization and Applications. Operator Theory: Advances and Applications, 142. Eds. Albrecht Böttcher, Marinus A. We prove criteria for the invertibility of the binomial functional operator
\[
A=aI-bW_\alpha
\]
in the Lebesgue spaces \(L^p(0,1)\), \( 1 < p < \infty\), where \(a\) and \(b\) are continuous functions on \((0,1)\), \(I\) is the identity operator, \(W_\alpha\) is the shift operator, \(W_\alpha f=f\circ\alpha\), generated by a non-Carleman shift \(\alpha:[0,1]\to[0,1]\) which has only two fixed points \(0\) and \(1\). We suppose that \(\log\alpha'\) is bounded and continuous on \((0,1)\) and that \(a,b,\alpha'\) slowly oscillate at \(0\) and \(1\). The main difficulty connected with slow oscillation is overcome by using the method of limit operators.

Energies of the [( n ,l= n -1),1= n =20] and the [( n ,l= n -2),2= n =20] levels have been calculated for several hydrogenlike kaonic atoms throughout the periodic table, using the current world average kaon mass. Calculations were done in the framework of the Klein–Gordon equation, with finite nuclear size and all-order vacuum polarization corrections.

In this letter we compare the room temperature ozone sensing properties of intrinsic zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films deposited by spray pyrolysis, dc and r.f. magnetron sputtering. Their sensor response exceeds 8 orders of magnitude when the film structure is constituted by nanocrystallites. These preliminary results clearly demonstrate that the films could be potentially used for ozone detection at room temperature.

Urze, Paula, António Moniz, and Sónia Barroso Practices and trends of telework in the Portuguese industry: the results of surveys in the textile, metal and software sectors. University Library of Munich, Germany, 2003. Abstract

The aim of the TeleRisk Project on labour relations and professional risks within the context of teleworking in Portugal – supported by IDICT – Institute for Development and Inspection of Working Conditions (Ministry of Labour), is to study the practices and forms of teleworking in the manufacturing sectors in Portugal. The project chose also the software industry as a reference sector, even though it does not intend to exclude from the study any other sector of activity or the so-called “hybrid” forms of work. However, the latter must have some of the characteristics of telework. The project thus takes into account the so-called “traditional” sectors of activity, namely textile and machinery and metal engineering (machinery and equipment), not usually associated to this type of work. However, telework could include, in the so-called “traditional” sectors, other variations that are not found in technologically based sectors. One of the evaluation methods for the dynamics associated to telework consisted in carrying out surveys by means of questionnaires, aimed at employers in the sectors analysed. This paper presents some of the results of those surveys. It is important to mention that, being a preliminary analysis, it means that it does not pretend to have exhausted all the issues in the survey, but has meant that it shows the bigger tendencies, in terms of teleworking practices, of the Portuguese industry.

"{Formation of a stable cyano-bridged dinuclear iron cluster following oxidation of the superoxide reductases from Treponema pallidum and Desulfovibrio vulgaris with K(3)Fe(CN)(6)}." Inorganic chemistry. 42 (2003): 938-940. Abstract
Superoxide reductases catalyze the monovalent reduction of superoxide anion to hydrogen peroxide. Spectroscopic evidence for the formation of a dinuclear cyano-bridged adduct after K(3)Fe(CN)(6) oxidation of the superoxide reductases neelaredoxin from Treponema pallidum and desulfoferrodoxin from Desulfovibrio vulgaris was reported. Oxidation with K(3)Fe(CN)(6) reveals a band in the near-IR with lambda(max) at 1020 nm, coupled with an increase of the iron content by almost 2-fold. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy provided additional evidence with CN-stretching vibrations at 2095, 2025-2030, and 2047 cm(-)(1), assigned to a ferrocyanide adduct of the enzyme. Interestingly, the low-temperature electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra of oxidized TpNlr reveal at least three different species indicating structural heterogeneity in the coordination environment of the active site Fe ion. Given the likely 6-coordinate geometry of the active site Fe(3+) ion in the ferrocyanide adduct, we propose that the rhombic EPR species can serve as a model of a hexacoordinate form of the active site.

Rheocasting, as a semi-solid process, allows the production of aluminium matrix composites at relatively low temperatures (ca. 580ºC), thus favouring a reduced reactivity at the reinforcement-metal matrix interface. When one considers the possibility of further processing (such as any treatment involving remelting, even if partial) of the material, this trait allows a more rigorous control of the interfaces. Composite samples have been produced using as matrix an Al-7Si-0.3Mg alloy reinforced with SiCp (granulometry: 120 μm; Vr = 0.30). These were rheocast at 583ºC, followed by forging and subsequent water-quenching. A structural characterisation (optical microscopy and XRD) of the as-received matrix material, as well as of the reinforced and non-reinforced rheocast material was performed. The phases identification will provide a basis for the understanding of the further processing where the rheocast material will be used as a raw material to produce functionally graded metal-matrix composites by centrifugal casting.
