We study the total cross section and angular distribution in Rayleigh scattering by hydrogen atom in the ground state, within the framework of Dirac relativistic equation and second-order perturbation theory. The relativistic states used for the calculations are obtained by making use of the finite basis-set method and expressed in terms of B splines and B polynomials. We pay particular attention to the effects that arise from higher (nondipole) terms in the expansion of the electron-photon interaction. It is shown that the angular distribution of scattered photons, while symmetric with respect to the scattering angle θ=90∘ within the electric dipole approximation, becomes asymmetric when higher multipoles are taken into account. The analytical expression of the angular distribution is parametrized in terms of Legendre polynomials. Detailed calculations are performed for photons in the energy range 0.5 to 10 keV. When possible, results are compared with previous calculations.

Pereira, Pedro, Helena Fino, and M. Ventim-Neves. "RF Varactor Design Based on Evolutionary Algorithms." Mixed Design of Integrated Circuits and Systems (MIXDES), 2012 Proceedings of the 19th International Conference. Warsaw, Poland 2012. 277-282. Abstract

This paper introduces an optimization methodology for the design of RF varactors. The characterization of the varactor behaviour is supported by a set of equations based on technological parameters, granting the accuracy of the results, as well as the adaptability of the model to any technology. The varactor design is achieved through the implementation of a Genetic Algorithms (GA) optimization methodology, which is able to deal with continuous and/or discrete variables, making possible to suit both technological and layout constraints. A set of working examples for UMC130 technology are addressed. The results presented, spotlight the potential of varactor analytical model, combined with a GA optimization procedure, when integrated in optimization design tools. The accuracy of the results is checked against HSPICE simulator.

Boavida, Nuno, and António Brandão Moniz Research and development expenditure in the business sector as indicator of knowledge economy: the Portuguese experience. Universidade Nova de Lisboa, IET-Research on Enterprise and Work Innovation, Faculty of Science and Technology, 2012. Abstract

The objective of the paper is to help to understand recent changes in the structure of R&D activities, by analyzing data on the expenditure of the business sector in research and development (R&D). The results are framed in an international context, through comparison with indicators from the most developed countries, divided by technological intensity and economic activity. The study reveals that the indicators of Portuguese R&D expenditure in the business sector are closely linked both to fiscal policy and to high foreign direct investment in knowledge-intensive industries. It also links these indicators to phenomena such as the abundance of skilled labor in pharmaceutical industries and the government intervention in some sectors of the economy (namely health and rail transportation).

Valtchev, {Stanimir Stoyanov}, and DEE Group Author. "R&D of an thermoelectric system - An innovative Linear Fresnel Reflector." MATCHMAKING RESEARCH Conference. 2012. 1-5. Abstract

The research on the solar concentrating equipment is intensified in the recent years in many scientific and industry groups and institutions. This growing interest is based mainly on the higher efficiency and lower investment in material that is typical for this solar technology. This work started not to answer a market problem but with the idea of development a new application for an domestic size collector of line-focussing Fresnel collector. Which is will be a important step for the renewable energy. If successful, in a few years a common person will be ready to produce solar thermoelectricity at home with the double benefit of producing electricity and hot steam. The paper presents a design methodology and heat transfer calculation for an concentrating system based on the Linear Fresnel Reflector (LFR) concept. The basic absorber design is an trapezoidal inverted air cavity without glass cover. The absorber is covered with a selective surface and is oriented north- south. This arrangement has shown good optical and thermal performance results validated by measurements during outdoor tests.
