The inductive fault current limiter is less compact and harder to scale to high voltage networks than the resistive one. Nevertheless, its simple construction and mechanical robustness make it attractive in low voltage grids. Thus, it might be an enabling technology for the advent of microgrids, low voltage networks with dispersed generation, controllable loads and energy storage. A new methodology for reverse engineering of inductive fault current limiters based on the independent analysis of iron cores and HTS cylinders is presented in this paper. Their electromagnetic characteristics are used to predict the devices' hysteresis loops and consequently their dynamic behavior. Previous models based on the separate analysis of the limiters' components were already derived, e.g. in transformer like equivalent models. Nevertheless, the assumptions usually made may limit these models' application, as shown in the paper. The proposed methodology obviates these limitations. Results are validated through simulations.

Trimethylboron (TMB) has been receiving attention as a valid alternative to diborane and methane mixtures for the deposition of p-type silicon films for applications in optoelectronic devices such as solar cells. In this paper we report on p-type hydrogenated nanocrystalline silicon carbide (nc-Si:C:H) films produced by standard 13.56 MHz plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition technique, using TMB as gas source, under high hydrogen dilution (98%) and using high deposition pressures (3 Torr). The films obtained were characterized by spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), Raman spectroscopy (RS), and electrical measurements to determine their optical, structural and electrical properties. We achieved conductivities as high as 8.3 (Ω cm) -1, one of the highest values of conductivity published to date using TMB with standard rf-PECVD. Spectroscopic ellipsometry modeling revealed that the films growth mechanism proceeds through a sub-surface layer mechanism that leads to the formation of nanocrystalline silicon. The paramagnetic effect due to the presence of a metal center with unpaired electrons is no longer considered a hindrance in protein NMR spectroscopy. In the present work, the paramagnetic effect due to the presence of a metal center with impaired electrons was used to map the interface of an electron transfer complex. Desulfovibrio gigas cytochrome c(3) was chosen as target to study the effect of the paramagnetic probe, Fe-rubredoxin, which produced specific line broadening in the heme IV methyl resonances M2(1) and M18(1). The rubredoxin binding surface in the complex with cytochrome c(3) was identified in a heteronuclear 2D NMR titration. The identified heme methyls on cytochrome c(3) are involved in the binding interface of the complex, a result that is in agreement with the predicted complexes obtained by restrained molecular docking, which shows a cluster of possible solutions near heme IV. The use of a paramagnetic probe in (1)HNMR titration and the mapping of the complex interface, in combination with a molecular simulation algorithm proved to be a valuable strategy to study electron transfer complexes involving non-heme iron proteins and cytochromes. Moniz, António, and Armin Grunwald Recent Experiences and Emerging Cooperation Schemes on TA and Education: An Insight into Cases in Portugal and Germany. University Library of Munich, Germany, 2009. Abstract

At the beginning of the 21st century there are new expectations and challenges towards Technology Assessment (TA). Among these there is a new awareness on TA issues in education, in particular at universities. While TA was mainly an activity at extra-universitarian research institutions for a long time now there are new developments and initiative towards integrating TA issues in university courses. We will first give an insight into the international development. Secondly we will focus on the “TA and education” landscape in Germany and Portugal in more detail, followed by a description of new and emerging forms of cooperation between Portugal and Germany in this field which might serve as a model or an example for further cooperation between other partners.

Caeiro, Frederico, M.Ivette Gomes, and Lígia Henriques Rodrigues. "Reduced-bias tail index estimators under a third-order framework." Commun. Stat., Theory Methods. 38 (2009): 1019-1040. Abstract

{Summary: We are interested in the comparison, under a third-order framework, of classes of second-order, reduced-bias tail index estimators, giving particular emphasis to minimum-variance reduced-bias estimators of the tail index $\gamma$. The full asymptotic distributional properties of the proposed classes are derived under a third-order framework and the estimators are compared with other alternatives, not only asymptotically, but also for finite samples through Monte Carlo techniques. An application to the log-exchange rates of the Euro against the USA Dollar is also provided.}

Recently V. Kokilashvili, N. Samko, and S. Samko have proved a sufficient condition for the boundedness of the Cauchy singular integral operator on variable Lebesgue spaces with radial oscillating weights over Carleson curves. This condition is formulated in terms of Matuszewska-Orlicz indices of weights. We prove a partial converse of their result.

A theoretical study of the all two-photon transitions from initial bound states with ni=2,3 in hydrogenic ions is presented. High-precision values of relativistic decay rates for ions with nuclear charge in the range 1<=Z<=92 are obtained through the use of finite basis sets for the Dirac equation constructed from B splines. We also report the spectral (energy) distributions of several resonant transitions, which exhibit interesting structures, such as zeros in the emission spectrum, indicating that two-photon emission is strongly suppressed at certain frequencies. We compare two different approaches (the line profile approach and the QED approach based on the analysis of the relativistic two-loop self-energy) to regularize the resonant contribution to the decay rate. Predictions for the pure two-photon contributions obtained in these approaches are found to be in good numerical agreement.

This paper describes the theoretical and experimental results achieved in optimizing the application of the series loaded series resonant converter for contactless energy transfer. The main goal of this work is to define the power stage operation mode that guarantees the highest possible efficiency. The results suggest a method to select the physical parameters (operation frequency, characteristic impedance, transformer ratio, etc.) to achieve that efficiency improvement. The research clarifies also the effects of the physical separation between both halves of the ferromagnetic core on the characteristics of the transformer. It is shown that for practical values of the separation distance, the leakage inductance, being part of the resonant inductor, remains almost unchanged. Nevertheless, the current distribution between the primary and the secondary windings changes significantly due to the large variation of the magnetizing inductance. An approximation in the circuit analysis permits to obtain more rapidly the changing values of the converter parameters. The analysis results in a set of equations which solutions are presented graphically. The graphics show a shift of the best efficiency operation zone, compared to the converter with an ideally coupled transformer. Experimental results are presented confirming that expected tendency.
