Salema, Maria Isabel G., Ana P. Barbosa-Povoa, and Augusto Q. Novais. "Design of a recovery network in Portugal: the electric and electronic equipment case." IEEE Internationa Engineering Management Conference, Europe. Estoril, Portugal 2008. 459-463. Abstract

An European directive established that all EU countries must have, until the end of 2006, a recovery network for the electric and electronic equipment waste (WEEE). In Portugal, a group of producers formed a non-profit organization to design and manage this waste now. In this work, a model developed previously by the authors to design and plan a generic WEEE network is presented and applied to the Portuguese case. The results obtained are discussed and compared with the network that is currently operating.

Moniz, António B. "Deslocalização empresarial e trabalho." O que está a mudar no trabalho humano? Lisbon: Janus-UAL, 2008. Abstract

This paper presents the mobile technology utilization in improving the remote access to the data acquisition processes of several automated monitoring system for air quality, water quality, and crop canopy microclimate. The system facilitates mobile environmental management and decision making by using in-situ measurements, GSM/GPRS informational fluxes, Pocket PCs, dGPS and mobile GIS resources. Data is retrieved via GSM/GPRS data modem to remote computer using digital (GSM) phone network. The main outcomes of this study were as follows: 1. designing the hardware, communication and software infrastructure of the system using telemetry features, 2. establishing the wireless connections and remote access from PDAs to the measurement servers, 3. programming and testing specific control virtual instruments (Vis) in NI LabVIEWTM, 4. obtaining a portable solution of statistical analysis and survey with PDA Vi (Virtual Instruments) interfaces for Pocket PC to gather, store, customize and report data combined with statistical processing functions, and 5. identifying mobile GIS applications for the environmental protection. The remote-accessing of the GIS server features, provided in-situ electronically reviews, mark up, and precise measurements of the site pollution plans. One possible solution to overcome the PDA hardware and software restraints is enabling the remote access and control of the DAQ and GIS software resources of the measurement server via internet.

Dias, Ricardo J., João M. Lourenço, and Gonçalo Cunha. "Developing libraries using software transactional memory." Comput. Sci. Inf. Syst.. 5.2 (2008): 103-117. Abstractcomsis_final.pdf

Software transactional memory is a promising programming model that adapts many concepts borrowed from the databases world to control concurrent accesses to main memory (RAM). This paper discusses how to support revertible operations, such as memory allocation and release, within software libraries that will be used in software memory transactional contexts. The proposal is based in the extension of the transaction life cycle state diagram with new states associated to the execution of user-defined handlers. The proposed approach is evaluated in terms of functionality and performance by way of a use case study and performance tests. Results demonstrate that the proposal and its current implementation are flexible, generic and efficient

Software transactional memory (STM) is a promising programming model that adapts many concepts borrowed from the databases world to control concurrent accesses to main memory (RAM) locations. This paper aims at discussing how to support apparently irreversible operations within a memory transaction.

Dinosaurs and other fossils have been artificially enhanced, or totally forged, to increase their commercial value. The most problematic forgeries to detect are based on original fossils that are artificially assembled. Several techniques are suggested for detecting hoaxes: detailed visual examination, chemical analysis, Xray or CT-scan, and ultraviolet light. It is recommended that museums and paleontological researchers do not purchase and/or trade fossils lacking clear provenience information. Exceptions to that general rule should be closely examined using techniques described herein.

Let G be a simple graph. A clique is a subgraph of G isomorphic to a complete graph, and a t-friendship graph is a graph consisting of t edge-disjoint cliques sharing one vertex. A t-friendship decomposition of G for a fixed value of t is a set F of edge-disjoint t-friendship subgraphs of G such that every edge of G belongs to exactly one element of F. It is proved that any graph of order n admits a t-friendship decomposition with at most n2/4t+n/4t+n elements for all fixed t≥2. For t=2,3 exact bounds are given. For t=2 the bound is ⌈n2/8⌉ for n even and (n2−1)/8 for n odd; for t=3 the bound is ⌈n2/12⌉ for n even and ⌈(n2−1)/12⌉ for n odd.

Operator Theory: Advances and Applications, 179. Eds. Joseph A. Ball, Yuli Eidelman, William J. Helton, Vadim Olshevsky, and James Rovnyak. Basel: Bikhäuser, 2008. 185-196. Abstract

We prove a higher order asymptotic formula for traces of finite block Toeplitz matrices with symbols belonging to Hölder-Zygmund spaces. The remainder in this formula goes to zero very rapidly for very smooth symbols. This formula refines previous asymptotic trace formulas by Szegő and Widom and complement higher order asymptotic formulas for determinants of finite block Toeplitz matrices due to Böttcher and Silbermann.

We prove higher-order asymptotic formulas for determinants and traces of finite block Toeplitz matrices generated by matrix functions belonging to generalized Hölder spaces with characteristic functions from the Bari-Stechkin class. We follow the approach of Böttcher and Silbermann and generalize their results for symbols in standard Hölder spaces.

The Upper Jurassic Lourinhã Formation (Lusitanian Basin, Portugal) contains a diverse dinosaur fauna comprising theropods, sauropods, stegosaurs, ankylosaurs and several genera of ornithopods. The sedimentology in the area favours preservation of tracksways, and tracks from most of the dinosaurs are also represented by skeletal remains. During fieldwork in the summer of 2003 a new, large, tridactyl track was found at the beach of Vale Frades, approximately 6 km north of Lourinhã (central west Portugal). The track was found together with a stegosaur track on a clay bed exposed within the intertidal zone. Due to the immediate danger of erosion, the track was collected and is now on display at Museu da Lourinhã. The track is 70 cm long and 69 cm wide, the toes are short and broad, with indications of short blunt claws, and there is a high angle of divarication between the outer digits. The shape and dimensions of the track identifies it as deriving from an ornithopod dinosaur with an estimated hip height around three metres. Although very large ornithopods are known from the Cretaceous, the largest known Jurassic ornithopod is Camptosaurus from North America, and the largest known from Portugal is the camptosaurid Draconyx loureiroi. Neither of these reached the body size suggested by the new track. So far the track described herein is the only evidence for a Jurassic ornithopod of that size.

A previous paper studied the stability of soldier-pile walls in clay under vertical loading using upper bound analyses. A classical Tresca yield criterion was assumed in that analysis. This paper extends that study by considering a tension truncated Tresca yield criterion in an upper bound numerical analysis of the problem. It shows that assuming zero tension soil strength has a significant influence on the values of the minimum soldier-pile resistance required to ensure stability.
