The project aim is to develop a Management Support System prototype to help managers to react quickly and efficiently to the effects of disruptions that can occur in supply chain. The research project is presented; including the current state of the art in Supply Chain disruptions, the research project objectives and main tasks. Preliminary research findings are presented and discussed.

The two new pincer azomethine-thiophene ligands (N,NE',N,NE')-N,N'-(thiophene-2,5-diylbis(methan-1-yl-1-ylidene))bis(naphathalen-2-ylmethanamine) (L1) and (E)-(4,6-dihydropyren-1-yl)-N-((5-((E)-(pyren-1-ylmethylimino)ethyl)thiophen-2-yl)methylene)methanamine (L2), their absorption, fluorescence and MALDI-TOF-MS spectroscopic studies are described. The two systems synthesised combine the emissive probes pyrene and naphthyl with the good chelating properties of a tridentate SN2 donor-set from a thiophene Schiff-base ligand. Both ligands gave analytically pure solid complexes with Ni(II) and Pd(II) salts. The bichromophoric pyrene derivative L2 presents two emission bands in solution, one corresponding to the monomer species and a red-shifted band attributable to the intramolecular excimer. Ni(II) and Pd(II) complexation affects the conformation in solution, increasing the monomer emission at the expense of the excimer band; this effect could be explored in metal ion sensing. System L1 behaves as a non emissive probe. In situ complexation reactions followed by MALDI-TOF-MS spectrometry without matrix support have also been performed; these experiments show that L1 could be a potential chemosensor for Ni(II) and Pd(11). Santos, F. P., and C. Cismasiu. "Shape memory alloys in structural vibration control." EVACES'07 - Experimental Vibration Analysis for Civil Engineering Structures. FEUP, Porto, Portugal 2007. Abstract

The unique superelastic behaviour exhibited by shape memory alloys (SMAs) allows the material to recover after withstanding large deformations. This recovery takes place without any residual strains, while dissipating a considerable amount of energy. This property makes the SMAs particularly suitable for applications in vibration control devices. Numerical models, calibrated with experimental laboratory tests, are used to investigate the dynamic response of vibration control devices. These devices are built up of austenitic superelastic wires. The energy dissipation and re-centring capabilities, important features of these devices, are clearly illustrated by the numerical tests. One of these devices is tested as a seismic passive vibration control system in a simplified numerical model of a railway viaduct.

Suppose \(\Gamma\) is a Carleson Jordan curve with logarithmic whirl points, \(\varrho\) is a Khvedelidze weight, \(p:\Gamma\to(1,\infty)\) is a continuous function satisfying \(|p(\tau)-p(t)|\le -\mathrm{const}/\log|\tau-t|\) for \(|\tau-t|\le 1/2\), and \(L^{p(\cdot)}(\Gamma,\varrho)\) is a weighted generalized Lebesgue space with variable exponent. We prove that all semi-Fredholm operators in the algebra of singular integral operators with \(N\times N\) matrix piecewise continuous coefficients are Fredholm on \(L_N^{p(\cdot)}(\Gamma,\varrho)\).

Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) is currently widely used as an insulating material for power cables due to its good physical properties, however when in use it undergoes an electrical ageing process. Its ability to trap electric charge can give rise to space charge accumulation in the bulk of the polymer and produce localised electric stresses that can lead to cable failure, since the electric field will be increased above the design stress in some regions favouring the initiation of degradation there. In this work the PEA (pulsed electro-acoustic) method was used to compare the charge dynamics in three samples (XLPE cable peelings) aged in different ways (electrothermally in the laboratory, field aged in service and thermally aged in the laboratory). Very different transient behavior was found depending upon the ageing history. This is related to differences in the migration of chemical species in the insulation layer, which are known to act as charge traps. All materials showed heterocharge peaks when the space charge reached stability, the magnitude of which seems to be related to the severity of the ageing. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
