In this work hafnium oxide (HfO2) was deposited by r.f. magnetron sputtering at room temperature and then annealed at 200 °C in forming gas (N2+H2) and oxygen atmospheres, respectively for 2, 5 and 10 h. After 2 h annealing in forming gas an improvement in the interface properties occurs with the associated flat band voltage changing from -2.23 to -1.28 V. This means a reduction in the oxide charge density from 1.33×1012 to 7.62×1011 cm-2. After 5 h annealing only the dielectric constant improves due to densification of the film. Finally, after 10 h annealing we notice a degradation of the electrical film's properties, with the flat band voltage and fixed charge density being -2.96 V and 1.64×1012 cm-2, respectively. Besides that, the leakage current also increases due to crystallization. On the other hand, by depositing the films at 200 °C or annealing it in an oxidizing atmosphere no improvements are observed when comparing these data to the ones obtained by annealing the films in forming gas. Here the flat band voltage is more negative and the hysteresis on the C-V plot is larger than the one recorded on films annealed in forming gas, meaning a degradation of the interfacial properties. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Abstractlapa_et_al_-_to10.o3.pdf

This paper is mainly focused on the characterisation of a glass material (GM) obtained from the thermal treatment of a bottom ash (BA) produced at the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) incineration plant of Valorsul. By melting the BA at 1400ºC during 2 hours, and without using any chemical additives, a homogeneous black-coloured glass was obtained. The thermal and mechanical properties of this glass were characterised. The thermal expansion coefficient, measured by dilatometry, was 9-10 x 10-6 per ºC and the modulus of rupture, determined by four-point bending test, was 75±6 MPa, which are similar values to those exhibited by commercial soda-lime-silica glasses used in structural applications. The chemical and the ecotoxicological leaching behaviour of the GM were also analysed. The GM was submitted to a leaching procedure composed of 15 sequential extraction cycles. A liquid/solid (L/S) ratio of 2 l/kg was applied in each cycle. The leachates were filtered through a membrane of PTFE (porosity: 0.45 µm). The filtered leachates were characterised for different chemical parameters and for an ecotoxicological indicator (bacterium Vibrio fischeri). The GM was also submitted to a microwave acidic digestion for the assessment of the total metal content. The crude BA was also submitted to the same experimental procedures. The GM showed levels of chemical emission and ecotoxicity for V. fischeri much lower than those determined for the crude BA. Similar characterisation studies will be pursued with the glass-ceramics produced by adequate thermal treatment of the glass, in order to investigate the effect of the crystallization on the final properties.

Águas, H., Pereira Costa Fortunato Martins L. D. E. "Linearity and sensitivity of MIS position sensitive detectors." Journal of Materials Science. 40 (2005): 1377-1381. AbstractWebsite

The linearity and sensitivity of linear Position Sensitive Detectors (PSD) are the two principal characteristics of sensors to be optimised in sensor fabrication. This work presents several efforts made to understand the internal and external parameters that influence the linearity and sensitivity of Metal Insulator Semiconductor (MIS) linear PSD with an active length of 6 cm. The use of long sensitive areas allows the PSD to achieve greater resolution without the need of a highly accurate light spot integration mechanism. The PSD is built in a multi-layered structure consisting of Cr/a-Si:H (n+ doped)/a-Si:H (intrinsic)/SiOx (passivation layer)/Au, where the active a-Si:H layers were deposited by Modified Triode Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition (MTPECVD), which allows the deposition of good electronic grade material with a low (≈ 1 × 1015 cm-3) defect density inferred by CPM. The sensor linearity and sensitivity shows dependence on the sensor width to length ratio, SiOx layer and on the value of the load resistance. Sensitivities of more than 30 mV/cm were achieved with linearity near 99%. Besides that, this type of MIS structure allows an improved spectral response in the near-UV region and has its maximum response at 540 nm. © 2005 Springer Science + Business Media, Inc.

In recent works large area hydrogenated amorphous silicon p-i-n structures with low conductivity doped layers were proposed as single element image sensors. The working principle of this type of sensor is based on the modulation, by the local illumination conditions, of the photocurrent generated by a light beam scanning the active area of the device. In order to evaluate the sensor capabilities is necessary to perform a response time characterization. This work focuses on the transient response of such sensor and on the influence of the carbon contents of the doped layers. In order to evaluate the response time a set of devices with different percentage of carbon incorporation in the doped layers is analyzed by measuring the scanner-induced photocurrent under different bias conditions. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. The present study reports low velocity impact tests on composite laminate plates reinforced either with Kevlar 29 or Dyneema. The tests are produced using a Rosand Precision Impact tester. The experimental results obtained for Kevlar 29 are simulated numerically. The deflection history and the peak of the impact force are compared with experimental data and used to calibrate the numerical model.

This work presents for the first time a study on the deposition of polymorphous silicon at an excitation frequency of 27.12 MHz in a large-area plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) reactor. Moreover, the films produced at 13.56 MHz were also investigated to compare their performance with that of the films produced at 27.12 MHz. The SiH4/H2 plasma was characterized by impedance probe measurements, aiming to identify the plasma conditions that lead to produce polymorphous films, under quasi-isothermal conditions. The films were characterized by spectroscopic ellipsometry, infrared absorption, Raman spectroscopy, and hydrogen exodiffusion experiments. These techniques enable a detailed structural characterization of the polymorphous films and a study of the differences between the films deposited at 27.12 MHz and 13.56 MHz. Conductivity measurements were also performed to determine the transport properties of the films. The results show that by using a 27.12 MHz frequency, the growth rate increased by 70% and a more stable, relaxed and denser structure was obtained.

Moniz, António Labour Market Policy in Portugal. University Library of Munich, Germany, 2002. Abstract

The Portuguese National Action Plan for Employment (NAP) is the main instrument for the labour market policy. It was adopted in 1998. The NAP transposes to the Portuguese reality the contents of such guidelines, with the adequate adjustments required by the national specificities, establishing objectives, quantified targets and action deadlines, as well as defining new programmes and measures. Therefore, the objectives of the labour market policy were focusing on the promotion of an adequate transition of the youngsters in active life, on the promotion of social and professional insertion and fight against long term unemployment and exclusion, on the improvement of basic and professional qualification of the working population in a perspective of lifelong training, namely as a way to prevent unemployment phenomena, and on the preventive management and follow-up of sectoral restructuring processes.
