A series of cobalt(II) compounds of the type [CoX2(alpha-diimine)] were synthesised by direct reaction of anhydrous CoCl2 or CoI2 and the corresponding alpha-diimine ligand, in CH2Cl2: [CoI2(o,o',p-Me3C6H2-DAB)] ( 1), [ CoI2(o,o'-(Pr2C6H3)-Pr-i-DAB)] ( 2), ( where Ar-DAB = 1,4-bis(aryl)-2,3-dimethyl-1,4-diaza-1,3-butadiene), and [CoCl2(o,o',p-Me3C6H2- BIAN)] (3), [CoCl2(o,o'- (Pr2C6H3)-Pr-i-BIAN)] (4), and [CoI2(o,o'-(Pr2C6H3)-Pr-i-BIAN)] (5) (where Ar-BIAN = bis(aryl) acenaphthenequinonediimine). All compounds were characterised by elemental analyses, IR, mass spectrometry, and X-ray diffraction whenever possible. The crystal structures of compounds 2-4 showed, in all cases, distorted tetrahedral geometries about the Co, built by two halogen atoms and two nitrogen atoms of the alpha-diimine ligand. Compounds 3 and 4, as well as [ CoCl2(o,o',p-Me3C6H2-DAB)] (1a), and [ CoCl2( o,o'- (Pr2C6H3)-Pr-i- DAB)] (2a), were activated by methylaluminoxane (MAO) and tested as catalysts for ethylene polymerisation, showing low catalytic activities. Selected polyethylene ( PE) samples were characterised by H-1 and C-13 NMR and FT-IR spectroscopies, and by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), revealing branching microstructures (2.5-5.5%). Proceedings of the Fourth conference on Hot topics in system dependability. {HotDep}'08. Berkeley, CA, USA: USENIX Association, 2008. 9. Abstractbyzantium-hotdep.pdf

Database systems are a key component behind many of today's computer systems. As a consequence, it is crucial that database systems provide correct and continuous service despite unpredictable circumstances, such as software bugs or attacks. This paper presents the design of Byzantium, a Byzantine fault-tolerant database replication middleware that provides snapshot isolation (SI) semantics. SI is very popular because it allows increased concurrency when compared to serializability, while providing similar behavior for typical workloads. Thus, Byzantium improves on existing proposals by allowing increased concurrency and not relying on any centralized component. Our middleware can be used with off-the-shelf database systems and it is built on top of an existing BFT library.

Dinosaurs and other fossils have been artificially enhanced, or totally forged, to increase their commercial value. The most problematic forgeries to detect are based on original fossils that are artificially assembled. Several techniques are suggested for detecting hoaxes: detailed visual examination, chemical analysis, Xray or CT-scan, and ultraviolet light. It is recommended that museums and paleontological researchers do not purchase and/or trade fossils lacking clear provenience information. Exceptions to that general rule should be closely examined using techniques described herein.

Operator Theory: Advances and Applications, 179. Eds. Joseph A. Ball, Yuli Eidelman, William J. Helton, Vadim Olshevsky, and James Rovnyak. Basel: Bikhäuser, 2008. 185-196. Abstract

We prove a higher order asymptotic formula for traces of finite block Toeplitz matrices with symbols belonging to Hölder-Zygmund spaces. The remainder in this formula goes to zero very rapidly for very smooth symbols. This formula refines previous asymptotic trace formulas by Szegő and Widom and complement higher order asymptotic formulas for determinants of finite block Toeplitz matrices due to Böttcher and Silbermann.
