Karlovich, Alexei Yu. "Asymptotics of block Toeplitz determinants generated by factorable matrix functions with equal partial indices." Mathematische Nachrichten. 280 (2007): 1118-1127. AbstractWebsite

We prove asymptotic formulas for block Toeplitz matrices with symbols admitting right and left Wiener-Hopf factorizations such that all partial indices are equal to some integer number. We consider symbols and Wiener-Hopf factorizations in Wiener algebras with weights satisfying natural submultiplicativity, monotonicity, and regularity conditions. Our results complement known formulas for Holder continuous symbols due to Bottcher and Silbermann.

We prove asymptotic formulas for determinants and traces of finite block Toeplitz matrices with symbols belonging to Wiener algebras with weights satisfying natural submultiplicativity, monotonicity, and regularity conditions. The remainders in these formulas depend on the weights and go rapidly to zero for very smooth symbols. These formulas refine or extend some previous results by Szegö, Widom, Bottcher, and Silbermann.

We prove asymptotic formulas for Toeplitz determinants generated by functions with sequences of Fourier coefficients belonging to weighted Orlicz sequence classes. We concentrate our attention on the case of nonvanishing generating functions with nonzero Cauchy index.

In 1999, the DEECA/INETI and the UBiA/FCT/UNL started a researching project on the partition of heavy metals during the combustion of stabilised sewage sludge (Biogran®), in a fluidised-bed reactor, and on the quality of the bottom ashes and fly ashes produced. This project was entitled Bimetal and was funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. In this paper only the results on the combustion of Biogran® are reported. The combustion process was performed in two different trials, in which different amounts of sewage sludge and time of combustion were applied. Several ash samples were collected from the bed (bottom ashes) and from two cyclones (first cyclone and second cyclone ashes). Sewage sludge, bed material (sand) and ash samples were submitted to the leaching process defined in the European leaching standard EN 12457-2. The eluates were characterized for a set of inorganic chemical species. The ecotoxicological levels of the eluates were determined for two biological indicators (Vibrio fischeri and Daphnia magna). The results were compared with the limit values of the CEMWE French Regulation. The samples were also ranked according to an index based on the chemical characterization of the eluates. It was observed an increase of the concentration of metals along the combustion system. The ashes trapped in the second cyclone, for both combustion trials, showed the highest concentration of metals in the eluates. Chemically, the ashes of the second cyclone were the most different ones. In the ecotoxicological point of view, the ecotoxicity levels of the eluates of the ashes, for both combustion cycles, did not follow the same pattern as observed for the chemical characterization. The ashes of the first cyclone showed the highest ecotoxicity levels for V. fischeri and D. magna. This difference on chemical and ecotoxicological results proves the need for performing both chemical and ecotoxicological characterizations of the sub-products of such type of thermal processes.

Rodrigues, Chastre C., and Manuel A. G. Silva. "Cyclic compression behaviour of polymer concrete." J. Polym. Eng.. 27 (2007): 525-545. Abstractrodrigues07si.pdfWebsite

Polymeric mortars or concrete are special building materials which can be used to repair or strengthen localized areas of structural elements. Following research on the behaviour of retrofitting reinforced concrete circular columns with FRP composite materials and bearing in mind the high strength of polymer concretes, it was decided to develop a solution to seismic retrofit of reinforced concrete columns with polymer concrete. The mechanical characteristics of different polymer concretes and especially their performance when subjected to cyclic axial compression, several bending tests, and monotonic and cyclic axial compression tests were studied, namely the compressive strength, the tensile strength on bending and the Young's modulus. Columns were also tested under axial compression and cyclic horizontal loads. The results of these tests are shown and interpreted. It is concluded that the improved behaviour in monotonic compression of polymer concrete is essentially associated with better strength characteristics of resin, whereas its superior behaviour under cyclic loading is linked to a smoother aggregate grading curve.

All European countries are building structures to support collection and recovery of electric and electronic waste (WEEE). In this work, the study of a Portuguese recovery network is presented. A MILP model is developed in order to determine the best WEEE network structure as well as the associated optimal plan. Several different analyses are performed.

Carvalho, H., and V. Cruz-Machado. "Designing principles to create resilient Supply Chains." Proceedings of the 2007 Industrial Engineering Research Conference. Nashville, USA 2007. 186-191. Abstract

This paper explores the designing principles to create resilient Supply Chains ({SC)} with the ability to return, rapidly, to the initial stage or to an improved one after a disturbance occurrence. Supply chain disturbances and failure modes are identified and discussed. The concept of resilience applied to {SCs} is defined and explored; a conceptual {SC} Resilience Index and a {SC} Resilience Indicator are proposed. A framework for the design of resilient supply chains is introduced, identifying main {SC} characteristic that can be modified to increase {SC} resilience and to mitigate its inherent vulnerability. An exploratory simulation study is presented to test the design of alternative {SC} scenarios.
