n this paper we give a partial answer to the following question: does a large subsemigroup of a semigroup S with the finite combinatorial property finite derivation type (FDT) also have the same property? A positive answer is given for large ideals. As a consequence of this statement we prove that, given a finitely presented Rees matrix semigroup M[S;I,J;P], the semigroup S has FDT if and only if so does M[S;I,J;P].

This paper presents techniques and tools to transform spreadsheets into relational databases and back. A set of data refinement rules is introduced to map a tabular datatype into a relational database schema. Having expressed the transformation of the two data models as data refinements, we obtain for free the functions that migrate the data. We use well-known relational database techniques to optimize and query the data. Because data refinements define bidirectional transformations we can map such database back to an optimized spreadsheet. We have implemented the data refinement rules and we have constructed tools to manipulate, optimize and refactor Excel-like spreadsheets.

The special Professor Walter E. Spear commemoration issue of the Philosophical Magazine, published in October 2009, contains papers which cover the numerous relevant issues, driven by commercial applications, primarily solar energy and displays. Kocka reviews the complex microstructure of crystallites embedded in the amorphous silicon tissue, the transport mechanism is determined by the conductive grains and influenced by the passivation through H at the grain boundaries. Hugger and co-researchers report on transient photocapacitance spectroscopy and drive-level capacitance profiling as a way of elucidating the fundamental electronic properties of hydrogenated ncSi. Tawada recounts the history of a-Si:H pin heterojunction solar cells, emphasizing the role of the p-type silicon carbide layer in the improvement of the device. Schubert and colleagues focus their work on the production of flexible PV modules with many applications in the architectural arena or integrated into clothing.

Moniz, António, and Margarida Ramires Paulos Futures of automobile industry and challenges on sustainable development and mobility. University Library of Munich, Germany, 2008. Abstract

Portugal had only very few foresight exercises on the automobile sector, and the most recent one was a survey held in a project on work organisation systems in the automobile industry, its recent historical paths and the special strategies of location of companies (the WorTiS project). This involved several teams with different disciplinary backgrounds and from two Portuguese universities. The provisional main results of the first round of a Delphi survey held in Portugal on the automotive sector were already published, but a further analysis was not yet done. This foresight survey was done under the WorTiS project, developed in 2004 by IET – Research Centre on Enterprise and Work Innovation (at FCT-UNL), and financed by the Portuguese Ministry of Science and Technology. Some of this experience on foresight analysis is also been transferred to other projects, namely the WORKS project on work organisation restructuring in the knowledge society that received the support from EC and still is running. The majority of experts considered having an average of less knowledge in almost all the scenario topics presented. This means that information on the automotive industry is not spread enough among academics or experts in related fields (regional scientists, innovation economists, engineers, sociologists). Some have a good knowledge but in very specialised fields. Others have expertise on foresight, or macroeconomics, or management sciences, but feel insecure on issues related with futures of automobile sector. Nevertheless, we considered specially the topics where the experts considered themselves to have some knowledge. There were no “irrelevant” topics considered as such by the expert panel. There are also no topics that are not considered a need for co-operation. The lack of technological infrastructures was not considered as a hindered factor for the accomplishment of any scenario. The experts’ panel considered no other international competence besides US, Jap

Sousa, Teresa. "Friendship decompositions of graphs." Discrete Mathemathics. 308 (2008): 3352-3360. Abstractfriendship-decomposition.pdfWebsite

Let G be a simple graph. A clique is a subgraph of G isomorphic to a complete graph, and a t-friendship graph is a graph consisting of t edge-disjoint cliques sharing one vertex. A t-friendship decomposition of G for a fixed value of t is a set F of edge-disjoint t-friendship subgraphs of G such that every edge of G belongs to exactly one element of F. It is proved that any graph of order n admits a t-friendship decomposition with at most n2/4t+n/4t+n elements for all fixed t≥2. For t=2,3 exact bounds are given. For t=2 the bound is ⌈n2/8⌉ for n even and (n2−1)/8 for n odd; for t=3 the bound is ⌈n2/12⌉ for n even and ⌈(n2−1)/12⌉ for n odd.

Prabakaran, R., Fortunato Martins Ferreira E. R. I. "Fabrication and characterization of hybrid solar cells based on copper phthalocyanine/porous silicon." Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids. 354 (2008): 2892-2896. AbstractWebsite

This work refers to the fabrication of hybrid solar cells based on porous silicon (PS) filled with copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) to form GZO/CuPc-PS/Si/Al structure. We used n-type Si since photoinduced charge transfer from CuPc to Si is observed only for n-type Si. The characteristic 100% peak at 6.8°2θ from XRD confirms that the CuPc coating on PS exists in α-CuPc polymorph. The systematic increase in FWHM of XRD peak at 69.1°2θ and red-shift of LO phonon Raman spectra indicate a progressive reduction of Si nanocrystallites size with increasing etching time and the estimated size agrees well with atomic force microscopic images. The FTIR results confirm the formation of α-CuPc polymorph and it is also corroborated well with XRD and Raman results. © 2008.

Moniz, António Futuros da indústria automóvel: Qual a sua importância para a definição do produto, modelos de produção e estratégias de mobilidade?[Futures of automobile industry: How important is it for. University Library of Munich, Germany, 2007. Abstract

Some programs and research networks are dealing with topics associated to the automtive sector and they observe one of the most significative sectores of modern economies. Because of that is so interesting to forecast some possible changes in an horizon of 10 to 20 years. But this exercse must not be centred only on technical aspects of automobile construction, or on the design, or even on the mobility systems. How one can face these problems, and how it can be so decisivelly important, is what we will try to answer in this paper that resumes some of the debates on the foresight exercises in Germany (Futur) and on the automotive sector in Portugal (WorTiS).
