This study aims to evaluate the effect of mineral fillers on bitumen ageing. Two different bitumens and four mastics were investigated in the unaged and long-term aged states, based on different properties (consistency, rheology, fatigue resistance and ductility). Mastics stiffened less due to ageing treatment than bitumens, especially with granite filler. However, the results of the performance tests were not definitive regarding the effect of the filler. Aged bitumen showed greater fatigue resistance and higher specific energy of ductile fracture than unaged bitumen, whereas the mastics showed minor variations in the specific energy of ductile fracture with ageing treatment, which is indicative of less ageing, but the fatigue resistance decreased significantly in mastics with one of the bitumens.

Adhesively bonded joints have been widely used by engineers to solve problems in different industries. Despite recent studies which have helped with the design and application of these joints, there are still several uncertainties that justify empirical implementation in practice. One main aspect is the rigorous understanding of the performance of these joints when subjected to cyclic loading. Although the monotonic performance of adhesively bonded joints is well known, the cyclic behaviour raises several issues. Therefore, a numerical strategy based on the Distinct Element Method (DEM) was implemented in this work to mitigate the lack of knowledge about the cyclic behaviour between two materials adhesively bonded to each other. For that purpose, the single-lap pull-push test was modelled and due to the diversity of the existing cohesive models, four different bond-slip relationships and two unloading paths (with ductile or “cleavage unloading”) were considered. The results suggest that if the bond-slip relationship has an elastic stage, then the interfacial bond degradation is delayed. On the other hand, the interfacial damage of the joints with the number of cycles increases rapidly in those cases where the bond-slip relationships have no elastic stage and, at the same time, the slip accumulation is allowed. In addition, the results of two different tests available in the literature were implemented and fairly reproduced by the DEM. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

We report on measurements of the Kβ diagram, valence-to-core (VtC), and hypersatellite X-ray spectra induced in metallic Cr by photon single and double K-shell ionization. The experiment was carried out at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource using the seven-crystal Johann-type hard X-ray spectrometer of the beamline 6-2. For the Kβ diagram and VtC transitions, the present study confirms the line shape features observed in previous works, whereas the K h β hypersatellite transition was found to exhibit a complex spectral line shape and a characteristic low-energy shoulder. The energy shift of the hypersatellite relative to the parent diagram line was deduced from the measurements and compared with the result of extensive multiconfiguration Dirac–Fock (MCDF) calculations. A very good agreement between experiment and theory was found. The MCDF calculations were also used to compute the theoretical line shape of the hypersatellite. A satisfactory agreement was obtained between the overall shapes of the experimental and theoretical spectra, but deviations were observed on the low- and high-energy flanks of the hypersatellite line. The discrepancies were explained by chemical effects, which were not considered in the MCDF calculations performed for isolated atoms.

This chapter provides an overview of the alpha paleobiodiversity of Angola based on the available fossil record that is limited to the sedimentary rocks, ranging in age from Precambrian to the present. The geological period with the highest paleobiodiversity in the Angolan fossil record is the Cretaceous, with more than 80{%} of the total known fossil taxa, especially marine molluscs, including ammonites as a majority among them. The vertebrates represent about 15{%} of the known fauna and about one tenth of them are species firstly described based on specimens from Angola.

Assessing wood fracture behavior is essential in the design of structural timber elements and connections. This is particularly the case for connections with the possibility of brittle splitting failure. The numerical cohesive zone models that are used to simulate the fracture behavior of wood make it necessary to assume a cohesive law of the material that relates cohesive tractions and crack opening displacements ahead of the crack tip. This work addresses the determination of the fracture cohesive laws of Eucalyptus globulus, a hardwood species with great potential in timber engineering. This study centres on Mode I fracture loading for RL and TL crack propagation systems using Double Cantilever Beam tests. The Compliance-Based Beam Method is applied as the data reduction scheme in order to obtain the strain energy release rate from the load-displacement curves. The cohesive laws are determined by differentiating the relationship between strain energy release rate and crack tip opening displacement. The latter is measured by the digital image correlation technique. High strain energy release rates were obtained for this species, with no big differences between crack propagation systems. The difference between the crack systems is somewhat more pronounced in terms of maximum stress that determines the respective cohesive laws.

We combined different experimental techniques with a theoretical approach to determine a consistent set of diagram lines energies and binding energies. We propose an original approach consisting in determining the mass attenuation coefficients in an energy range covering the L-, M- and N- absorption edges, including a detailed evaluation of the associated uncertainties, to derive precisely the binding energies. We investigated the Lα, Lβ and M spectra of Gd with an independantly calibrated high-resolution anti-parallel double-crystal x-ray spectrometer. All the lines were identified and found in excellent agreement with the binding energies previously derived. Morever, we identified for the first time M5−O2, M4−O2,3 and M4−N2,3 diagram lines.

Este projeto é delineado no contexto do Observatório de Literacia Oceânica – espaço de investigação transdisciplinar e transcultural. O seu objeto de estudo são diferentes comunidades costeiras urbanas, localizadas na área entre a Costa da Caparica e a Fonte da Telha. As comunidades piscatórias, situadas nessas áreas costeiras urbanas são social, económica, cultural e intelectualmente invisíveis. Numa perspetiva de educação intercultural e de inovação educativa, em ambientes tecnologicamente enriquecidos, que possibilitem a comunicação em rede, pretende-se desenvolver a co-construção de um museu virtual sobre as Artes da Pesca locais, sustentada em conceitos e conteúdos da disciplina de História. Pretende-se compreender de que forma se realizam as interações entre saber formal e informal, utilizando instrumentos e ambientes digitais, e como se poderá melhorar o desempenho das comunidades estudantis piscatórias. Os participantes neste projeto pertencem às comunidades piscatórias da área acima descrita e são estudantes de escolas da região da Caparica. Fazendo uso da etnografia crítica, num ambiente educacional formal e tecnologicamente enriquecido, pretende-se fomentar interações entre saberes formais e informais. A construção da plataforma digital e a construção e aplicação de instrumentos, resultando num museu virtual, servir-se-ão da metodologia Design-based Research.

ZnSnO3 semiconductor nanostructures have several applications as photocatalysis, gas sensors, and energy harvesting. However, due to its multicomponent nature, the synthesis is far more complex than its binary counter parts. The complexity increases even more when aiming for low-cost and low-temperature processes as in hydrothermal methods. Knowing in detail the influence of all the parameters involved in these processes is imperative, in order to properly control the synthesis to achieve the desired final product. Thus, this paper presents a study of the influence of the physical parameters involved in the hydrothermal synthesis of ZnSnO3 nanowires, namely volume, reaction time, and process temperature. Based on this study a growth mechanism for the complex Zn:Sn:O system is proposed. Two zinc precursors, zinc chloride and zinc acetate, were studied, showing that although the growth mechanism is inherent to the material itself, the chemical reactions for different conditions need to be considered.
