Moniz, António Organização do trabalho e controlo de qualidade numa estação de soldadura robotizada[Work organisation and quality control in a welding robotic cell]. University Library of Munich, Germany, 1993. Abstract

In this paper is analyzed the work organization and the forms of quality control in a robotic welding station in a company of office equipment and metal components manufacturing. The robotic cell is recent and works in two shifts. Quality and production rationalization implied in this firms the adoption of a strategy of organization of teamwork, and it is supported the collaborative tools to decrease the possibilities for errors and to improve means and methods of manufacturing. The analysis of quality control process needed the use of productivity indicators. In this way it was possible to understand the connections between the function quality and the new form of work organization adopted in this innovative experience in Portugal.

A compact cesium ion source with a Wien filter is described. This source has been developed in order to produce a pure beam of cesium ions for positive SIMS analysis. The ions are produced by a surface ionization ion emitter. The initial beam is about 99% pure and the remaining 1% is removed via the Wien filter. An asymmetric einzel lens at the end provides the focusing of the beam on the target. A short description of the source is presented as well as the measured final beam characteristics.

Moniz, António Trabalho Operário e Novas Tecnologias de Produção: Alguns resultados de investigações internacionais[Workers labour and new production technologies: some results from international research]. University Library of Munich, Germany, 1993. Abstract

In the last two decades (70 and 80) there took place an intensive controversy in the field of Industrial and Work Sociology. There the topic of the study object of this scientific discipline is again discussed. This controversy, however, has a relatively different sense in comparison with the one that existed in early 60ies. The more recent one followed the increasing number of possibilities of electronical equipment for data processing at the same time its price is decreasing. In this article we try to give knowledge of the main elements that take part in such debate. It is also important to present the international character of the research developed in association with this discussion. It evolves a plurality of research teams that present, compare and synthesize the results of empirical studies that are applied for a wide variety of countries.

The present work studies the behaviour of bonded steel plates to reinforced concrete elements, which can be used in the strengthening of concrete structural elements. Metallic expansion bolts can be added. The objective of this dissertation is to investigate the behaviour to monotonic actions and particularly to cyclic loading of steel-epoxy-concrete connection with expansion bolts. This cyclic action is of particular interest due to the strong seismicity of the Portuguese territory. The research is mainly based in experimental analysis. The caracterization of the materials was carried out. Six models of the steel-epoxy connection were tested with monotonic loading. Twenty six models of steel-epoxy-concrete bond were submitted either to monotonic or to cyclic actions.Besides the type of action, other parameters were studied in the steel-epoxy-concrete connection models. These were the bond geometry area, the type of concrete, the type of epoxy and connection - with or without metallic expansion bolts.A parametric study with a numerical model of finite elements, as well as a global analysis of the experimental tests of the steel-epoxy-concrete connection was carried out.

Moniz, António Concepção de postos de trabalho em novos sistemas produtivos: o exemplo da robótica industrial [Job design in new productive systems: the exemple of industrial robotics]. University Library of Munich, Germany, 1993. Abstract

The design of jobs is defined and its different implications. These aspects must be taken into consideration when applied to new automated systems, once it can occur workers in-adaptations to certain type of activity and tasks. Other concepts that emerge from this are the mental workload, stress, work accidents, shift work, or the physical environment that can reveal to become determinant in the process of job design. That means also the organizational design. In this sense, the manufacturing, organizational and individual dimensions, are the most meaningful in the mentioned process of organizational design. Are analyzed different application cases of robotized systems and their social effects, mostly those that are related to the dimensions of working conditions. Are particularly analyzed the new risk situations that occur with the use of robotic systems. One concludes on the need to take into consideration qualitative variables in the definition and design of robotic cells, jobs and production systems. This consideration influences directly in the labor productivity, in such way that the development of these methodologies of analysis can be considered as integrating the processes of technological innovation in manufacturing.

Fortunato, E., Vieira Ferreira Carvalho Lavareda Martins M. L. C. "Large area position sensitive detector based on amorphous silicon technology." Materials Research Society Symposium Proceedings. Vol. 297. 1993. 981-986. Abstract

We have developed a rectangular dual-axis large area Position Sensitive Detector (PSD), with 5 cm×5 cm detection area, based on PIN hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) technology, produced by Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD). The metal contacts are located in the four edges of the detected area, two of them located on the back side of the ITO/PIN/Al structure and the others two located in the front side. The key factors of the detectors resolution and linearity are the thickness uniformity of the different layers, the geometry and the contacts location. Besides that, edge effects on the sensor's corner disturb the linearity of the detector. In this paper we present results concerning the linearity of the detector as well as its optoelectronic characteristics and the role of the i-layer thickness on the final sensor performances.

We have developed large area (up to 80mm×80mm) Thin Film Position Sensitive Detectors (TFPSD) based on hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H). Although crystalline silicon PSDs have been realized and applied to optical systems, their detection area is small (less than 10mm×10mm), which implies the need of optical magnification systems for supporting their field of applications towards large area inspection systems, which does not happen by using a-Si:H devices. The key factors for the TFPSDs resolution are the thickness uniformity of the constituting layers, the geometry and the position of the contacts. In this paper we present data on single and dual-axis rectangular TFPSDs correlating, their performances with the different underlying lateral effects. For the single axis-detector, with two opposite extended contacts, the output photocurrent difference to sum ratio is a linear function of the position of a narrow incident light beam, even for low illumination levels (below 20 lux). For the dual-axis detector with extended contacts, at all four sides (except for small gaps at the vertices due to edge effects) an almost linear relation has been found between the incident light spot position along both axis and the corresponding output photocurrents. © 1993.
