Chastre, Carlos. "Prólogo." Cáceres-Florencia, patrimonio vivo: Ensayos técnico-arquitectónicos. Vol. 3. Cáceres: Grupo de Investigación de Construcciones Arquitectónicas de la Universidad de Extremadura, 2017. 11-15. Abstract

Almeida, R. M., S. Dell'acqua, L. Krippahl, J. J. Moura, and S. R. Pauleta. "Predicting Protein-Protein Interactions Using BiGGER: Case Studies." Molecules. 21 (2016). AbstractWebsite

The importance of understanding interactomes makes preeminent the study of protein interactions and protein complexes. Traditionally, protein interactions have been elucidated by experimental methods or, with lower impact, by simulation with protein docking algorithms. This article describes features and applications of the BiGGER docking algorithm, which stands at the interface of these two approaches. BiGGER is a user-friendly docking algorithm that was specifically designed to incorporate experimental data at different stages of the simulation, to either guide the search for correct structures or help evaluate the results, in order to combine the reliability of hard data with the convenience of simulations. Herein, the applications of BiGGER are described by illustrative applications divided in three Case Studies: (Case Study A) in which no specific contact data is available; (Case Study B) when different experimental data (e.g., site-directed mutagenesis, properties of the complex, NMR chemical shift perturbation mapping, electron tunneling) on one of the partners is available; and (Case Study C) when experimental data are available for both interacting surfaces, which are used during the search and/or evaluation stage of the docking. This algorithm has been extensively used, evidencing its usefulness in a wide range of different biological research fields.

The aim of this work is to study the behaviour of reinforced concrete flat slab structures under combined vertical and horizontal cyclic loading. A total of five specimens were cast and tested: a control specimen was punched without eccentricity, one specimen was tested under constant vertical loading and monotonically increased eccentricity until failure and the remaining three were tested under constant vertical load, at different shear ratios, and cyclic horizontal loading with increasing horizontal drift ratios. All slabs were similar, measuring 4.25×1.85×0.15m3. The reinforced concrete slab specimens were connected to two steel half columns by 0.25×0.25m2 rigid steel plates, prestressed against the slab using steel bolts, to ensure monolithic behaviour. The cyclic tests were performed using an innovative test setup that allows bending moment redistribution, line of inflection mobility, assures equal vertical displacements at the North-South borders and symmetrical shear forces. Results show that cyclic horizontal actions are very harmful to the slab–column connection, resulting in low horizontal drifts and energy dissipation.

Ramos, António, Rui Marreiros, André Almeida, Brisid Isufi, and Micael Inácio. "Punching of Flat Slabs under Reversed Horizontal Cyclic Loading." ACI Fall Convention 2016. Philadelphia: ACI, 2016. Abstract

Flat slab structures are a very common structural solution nowadays, due to their architectural and economic advantages. However, flat slab-column connections may be vulnerable to punching failure, especially in an event of an earthquake, with potentially high human and economic losses. This type of structural solution is adequately covered by design codes and recommendations in North America, due to a large amount of experimental research carried out. In Europe the situation is different, missing specific guidance to flat slab design under earthquake action in most European codes. The ACI 318-14 prescriptive approach to the gravity shear ratio-drift ratio relationship shows good agreement with experimental results. Following a similar approach and, based in a databank containing cyclic horizontally loaded tests of slab-column connections found in literature, proposals are made applicable to EC2 and MC2010.

The first successful ablation of magnesium oxide through a home-made continuous-wave Cr:Nd:YAG ceramic solar laser is reported. A stationary heliostat-parabolic mirror solar energy collection and concentration system was used. A stable continuous-wave laser output power of 19.2 W was attained with laser beam brightness figure of merit 7.6 times higher than that of the previous scheme, enabling therefore the direct ablation of pure magnesium by our solar-pumped laser with only 1.6 m2 effective collection area. This could be an important step towards renewable magnesium production, offering multiple advantages, such as reducing agent avoidance, in relation to that of the previous Fresnel lens Cr:Nd:YAG continuous-wave solar laser system. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.

Titanium dioxide was synthesized on glass substrates from titanium (IV)isopropoxide and hydrochloride acid aqueous solutions through microwave irradiation using as seed layer either fluorine-doped crystalline tin oxide (SnO2:F) or amorphous tin oxide (a-SnOx). Three routes have been followed with distinct outcome: (i) equimolar hydrochloride acid/water proportions (1HCl:1water) resulted in nanorod arrays for both seed layers; (ii) higher water proportion (1HCl:3water) originated denser films with growth yield dependent on the seed layer employed; while (iii) higher acid proportion (3HCl:1water) hindered the formation of TiO2. X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that the materials crystallized with the rutile structure, possibly with minute fractions of brookite and/or anatase. XRD peak inversions observed for the materials synthesized on crystalline seeds pointed to preferred crystallographic orientation. Electron diffraction showed that the especially strong XRD peak inversions observed for TiO2 grown from the 1HCl:3water solution on SnO2:F originated from a [001] fiber texture. Transmittance spectrophotometry showed that the materials with finer structure exhibited significantly higher optical band gaps. Photocatalytic activity was assessed from methylene blue degradation, with the 1HCl:3water SnO2:F material showing remarkable degradability performance, attributed to a higher exposure of (001) facets, together with stability and reusability. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.
