A general model for the design and planning of closed-loop supply chains is proposed. The model is both strategic and tactical in nature, containing two levels of decisions: the location of facilities and the planning of production, storage and distribution. Its mathematical formulation is solved using a standard Branch and Bound technique. The model applicability and accuracy are studied on a modified version of an already published case study.

If H is a family of graphs, then an H-decomposition of a graph G is a partition of the edges of G each element of which induces a copy of a graph in G.
This paper addresses the problem of finding the number φ(n,H), the smallest number k such that every graph on n vertices has an H-decomposition with at most k elements. φ(n,H) is found in the cases when H={K2,C5}; when H={K2,C5+e}, where e is a chord of the C5; when H={K2,K4−e}; and when H={K2,K3+e}, where e is a pendant edge added to one vertex in the K3.

A multi-product model for the design of global supply chains with reverse flows is proposed. Two levels of decisions are considered, one strategic and one tactical. The first is modelled through a macro perspective of time where the determination of the network structure and flows is accomplished. At tactical level, a micro perspective of time is considered, where production planning and inventory management are addressed in detail. A mixed integer linear programming formulation is developed which is solved with standard Branch and Bound techniques. The model accuracy and suitability are studied using a case study.

Stat. 3, 1163–1174 (1975; Zbl 0323.62033)] of a positive tail index $\gamma$, in order to remove it from the classical Hill estimator in different asymptotically equivalent ways. If the second order parameters in the bias are computed at an adequate level $k_1$ of a larger order than that of the level $k$ at which the Hill estimator is computed, there may be no change in the asymptotic variances of these reduced bias tail index estimators, which are kept equal to the asymptotic variance of the Hill estimator, i.e., equal to $\gamma^2$. The asymptotic distributional properties of the proposed estimators of $\gamma$ are derived and the estimators are compared not only asymptotically, but also for finite samples through Monte Carlo techniques.}

Much attention is currently given to the study of supply chains. Most studies are, however, only concerned with forward chains, rendering reverse chains a field insufficiently covered. Few optimization models addressing either the design of reverse networks or the simultaneous design of forward and reverse networks have been presented. We propose a MILP model for the design and planning of an integrated forward and reverse chain. While minimizing cost, the network structure is defined simultaneously with production and storage planning. Dynamic aspects are accounted for using a two-time scale, fully interconnected structure, where at a macro time the network design is performed and at a micro time the planning is optimised. The deterministic model is extended and a scenario approach is applied to account for uncertainties in demand and return of products. A case study is solved and a common structure to all scenarios is obtained, while scenario dependent policies are defined for distribution, production and storage. The model generality is corroborated with good performance results.

As was recently published in the GERPISA newsletter, one of the aims of the research for the new years will be the knowledge of interactions between the organisational company dynamics and the social-economical models of development. If one takes the example of the German exercise in the framework of FUTUR programme, one of the main thematic groups that emerged from the first discussions was preciselly “Mobility: individually atractive and socially sustainable”. Also the IMVP programme at MIT is taking these questions on the “visions for a sustainable future” theme. In the same way the WorTiS Project analysed several scenario topics on the issue of mobility and automotive industry. Those scenario topics are explained and justified in this research paper.

In the last decade a considerable amount of research work has focused on distributed debugging, one of the crucial fields in the parallel software development cycle. The productivity of the software development process strongly depends on the adequate definition of what debugging tools should be provided, and what debugging methodologies and functionalities should these tools support. The work described in this dissertation was initiated in 1995, in the context of two research projects, the SEPP (Software Engineering for Parallel Processing) and HPCTI (High-Performance Computing Tools for Industry), both sponsored by the European Union in the Copernicus program, which aimed at the design and implementation of an integrated parallel software development environment. In the context of these projects, two independent toolsets have been developed, the GRADE and EDPEPPS parallel software development environments. Our contribution to these projects was in the debugging support. We have designed a debugging engine and developed a prototype, which was integrated the both toolsets (it was the only tool developed in the context of the SEPP and HPCTI projects which achieved such a result). Even after the closing of those research projects, further research work on distributed debugger has been carried on, which conducted to the re-design and re-implementation of the debugging engine. This dissertation describes the debugging engine according to its most up-to-date design and implementation stages. It also reposts some of the experimental work made with both the initial and the current implementations, and how it contributed to validate the design and implementations of the debugging engine.

This paper presents results of the spatial and frequency detection limits of an integrated array of 32 one-dimensional amorphous silicon thin film position sensitive detectors with a nip structure, under continuous and pulsed laser operation conditions. The data obtained show that 0.45×0.06 cm arrays, occupying a total active area of about 1 cm2 have a spatial resolution better than 10 μm (modulation transfer function of about 0.2), with a cut-off frequency of about 6.8 KHz. Besides that, under pulsed laser conditions the device non-linearity has its minimum (about 1.6%), for a frequency of about 200Hz. Up to the limits of the cut-off frequency, the device non-linearity increases to values above 4%.
