Thyreophoran dinosaurs have spike- and club-shaped osteoderms probably used for defensive weapons. The structural and histological variations have been little known. Here, we provide the comparisons of the internal structures in defensive weapons of ankylosaurs and stegosaurs, using spikes of a polacanthid (Gastonia) and a nodosaurid (Edmontonia), clubs of ankylosaurids (Saichania and Ankylosauridae indet. from Canada), and spikes of stegosaurids (Stegosaurus and Dacentrurus), which sheds light on understandings of evolutionary history and functional implications of defensive weapons in thyreophorans. In ankylosaurs, the structural and histological features of spikes and clubs are similar with those of small osteoderms in having thin compact bones, thick cancellous bones with large vascular canals, and abundant collagen fibers. A previous study demonstrated that each of three groups of ankylosaurs (polacanthid, nodosaurid, and ankylosaurid) has distinct characteristic arrangements of collagen fibers in small osteoderms. This study shows that spikes and clubs of ankylosaurs maintain the same characteristic features for each group despite of the differences in shapes and sizes. Conversely, the spike-shaped osteoderms in primitive (Dacentrurus) and derived (Stegosaurus) stegosaurids have similar structure to each other and are significantly different from the other types of stegosaur osteoderms (throat bony ossicles and plates) in having thick compact bones with a medullary cavity. These lack abundant collagen fibers unlike ankylosaur osteoderms. The spikes of ankylosaurs and stegosaurs are similar in shape, but their structural and histological features are different in having unique structures of collagen fibers for ankylosaurs and thick compact bones for stegosaurs, providing enough strength to have large spikes and to use them as defensive weapons. Although the shapes of ankylosaur clubs are different from spikes, the internal structures are similar, suggesting that ankylosaurs maintain similar structures despite of different shapes in osteoderms. These results indicate that ankylosaurs and stegosaurs used different strategies independently to evolve defensive weapons.

Dias, Ricardo J., João M. Lourenço, and Gonçalo Cunha. "Developing libraries using software transactional memory." Comput. Sci. Inf. Syst.. 5.2 (2008): 103-117. Abstractcomsis_final.pdf

Software transactional memory is a promising programming model that adapts many concepts borrowed from the databases world to control concurrent accesses to main memory (RAM). This paper discusses how to support revertible operations, such as memory allocation and release, within software libraries that will be used in software memory transactional contexts. The proposal is based in the extension of the transaction life cycle state diagram with new states associated to the execution of user-defined handlers. The proposed approach is evaluated in terms of functionality and performance by way of a use case study and performance tests. Results demonstrate that the proposal and its current implementation are flexible, generic and efficient

Software transactional memory (STM) is a promising programming model that adapts many concepts borrowed from the databases world to control concurrent accesses to main memory (RAM) locations. This paper aims at discussing how to support apparently irreversible operations within a memory transaction.

Antão, Armando N., Nuno Costa M. da Guerra, Manuel Matos Fernandes, and António Cardoso. "Influence of tension cut-off on the stability of anchored concrete soldier-pile walls in clay." Canadian Geotechnical Journal. 45 (2008): 1036-1044. AbstractWebsite

A previous paper studied the stability of soldier-pile walls in clay under vertical loading using upper bound analyses. A classical Tresca yield criterion was assumed in that analysis. This paper extends that study by considering a tension truncated Tresca yield criterion in an upper bound numerical analysis of the problem. It shows that assuming zero tension soil strength has a significant influence on the values of the minimum soldier-pile resistance required to ensure stability.

Caeiro, Frederico, and M.Ivette Gomes. "Minimum-variance reduced-bias tail index and high quantile estimation." REVSTAT. 6 (2008): 1-20. Abstract

{Summary: Heavy tailed-models are quite useful in many fields, like insurance, finance, telecommunications, internet traffic, among others, and it is often necessary to estimate a high quantile, i.e., a value that is exceeded with a probability $p$, small. The semiparametric estimation of this parameter relies essentially on the estimation of the tail index, the primary parameter in statistics of extremes. Classical semi-parametric estimators of extreme parameters show usually a severe bias and are known to be very sensitive to the number $k$ of top order statistics used in the estimation. For $k$ small they have a high variance, and for large $k$ a high bias. Recently, new second-order ``shape'' and ``scale'' estimators allowed the development of second-order reduced-bias estimators, which are much less sensitive to the choice of $k$. Here we study, under a third order framework, minimum-variance reduced-bias (MVRB) tail index estimators, recently introduced in the literature, and dependent on an adequate estimation of second order parameters. The improvement comes from the asymptotic variance, which is kept equal to the asymptotic variance of the classical Hill estimator [ıt B. Hill}, Ann. Stat. 3, 1163–1174 (1975; Zbl 0323.62033)] provided that we estimate the second order parameters at a level of a larger order than the level used for the estimation of the first order parameter. The use of those MVRB tail index estimators enables us to introduce new classes of reduced-bias high quantile estimators. These new classes are compared among themselves and with previous ones through the use of a small-scale Monte Carlo simulation.}

Superelasticity, a unique property of shape memory alloys (SMAs), allows the material to recover after withstanding large deformations. This recovery takes place without any residual strains, while dissipating a considerable amount of energy. This property makes SMAs particularly suitable for applications in vibration control devices. Numerical models, calibrated with experimental laboratory tests from the literature, are used to investigate the dynamic response of three vibration control devices, built up of austenitic superelastic wires. The energy dissipation and re-centering capabilities, important features of these devices, are clearly illustrated by the numerical tests. Their sensitivity to ambient temperature and strain rate is also addressed. Finally, one of these devices is tested as a seismic passive vibration control system in a simplified numerical model of a railway viaduct, subjected to different ground accelerations.

Cunha, Ana Diniz, Maria Isabel Gomes Salema, Ana Paula Barbosa-povoa, and Augusto Q. Novais. "An Optimization Model for the Design of Closed Loop Supply Chains with Minimum Environmental Impacts." Computer Aided Chemical Engineering. 2008. 1-6. Abstract2008_cunhasalemabarbosapovoanovais08_escape18.pdf

In this work, the design of supply chains with reverse flows is studied in a multi-objective context. A MILP model is developed for the optimization of the supply chain structures where both environmental impacts and costs are considered. An optimal Pareto front is obtained that plays an important role in evaluating the best locations of all the entities in the supply chain while accounting for the global supply chain environmental impacts. A study based on a Portuguese glass industry is presented to corroborate both the applicability and the adequacy of the model.

Camarinha-Matos, L. M., H. Afsarmanesh, T. Cardoso, and E. Klen. "A reference curriculum for education in collaborative networks." Methods and Tools for Collaborative Networked Organizations. 2008. 491-511. Abstract

A proposal for a reference curriculum for teaching Collaborative Networks at university level is introduced. This curriculum is based on the experience of the authors in teaching and disseminating corresponding concepts in the context of several international projects as well as on the findings of a survey conducted worldwide. A set of teaching units and the corresponding content are introduced. Guidelines for the application of the curriculum are given. A set of experiments and projects are also suggested as a support for the accompanying hands-on lab work. Finally, one concrete experience of application of the proposed curriculum is described.
