High-quality SrBi2Nb2O9 (SBN) single crystals were grown from a melt using a high-temperature self-flux solution method and Bi2O3 added with B2O3 as a flux. A suitable thermal profile involving slow cooling rates allowed growing large and translucent SBN crystals exhibiting platelet morphology with typical size ∼5 × 5 mm2 and thickness approximately 400 μm. X-ray diffraction revealed a dominant (001)-orientation of the major face of the platelet crystals and edges oriented parallel to the [110] directions. The dielectric properties were evaluated along the ab-plane and in the c-axis direction. The ferro-paraelectric phase transition was observed at TC = 440°C with Curie-Weiss relationship above TC. The anisotropy of dielectric permittivity, i.e., the ratio between permittivity in the ab-plane and along c-axis was about 10 at TC-The obtained results are used to discuss the observed correlations between anisotropy, crystalline orientation, and electrical properties.

Águas, H., Pereira Costa Fortunato Martins L. D. E. "Super linear position sensitive detectors using MIS structures." Optical Materials. 27 (2005): 1088-1092. AbstractWebsite

This work reports on the fabrication process and performances presented by metal insulator semiconductor (MIS) linear position sensitive detectors (PSD) with an active length of 6 cm. The use of long sensitive areas allows the PSD to achieve higher resolution without the need of a highly accurate light spot integration mechanism. The PSD is built in a multilayered structure consisting of Cr/a-Si:H (n+ doped)/a-Si:H (intrinsic)/SiOx (passivation layer)/Au, where the active a-Si:H layers were deposited by a modified triode plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition (MTPECVD), which allows the deposition of highly electronic grade material with a low (≈ × 1015 cm-3) defect density inferred by CPM. The sensor linearity and sensitivity shows dependence on the sensor width to length ratio and on the value of load resistance. Sensitivities of more than 30 mV/cm were achieved with linearity near 99%. Besides that, this type of MIS structure allows an improved spectral response near the UV region and has the maximum response at 540 nm. © 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Duarte, A. R. C., L. E. Anderson, C. M. M. Duarte, and S. G. Kazarian. "{A comparison between gravimetric and in situ spectroscopic methods to measure the sorption of CO{\textless}inf{\textgreater}2{\textless}/inf{\textgreater} in a biocompatible polymer}." Journal of Supercritical Fluids. 36 (2005). Abstract

In situ ATR-IR spectroscopy was used to simultaneously measure the sorption and swelling of carbon dioxide at high pressures in a biocompatible acrylate copolymer poly(methylmethacrylate-co-ethylhexylacrylate-co- ethyleneglycoldimethacrylate), P(MMA-EHA-EGDMA). The $ν$ 3 band of CO 2 dissolved in the polymer (at 2335 cm -1 ) was used to calculate the sorption data and the polymer swelling was determined by analyzing the changes in the absorbance of the $ν$(CO) band (at 1730 cm -1 ) of the polymer. Transmission spectroscopy in the near-IR region was also used to study the sorption of CO 2 in the polymer using combinational and overtone bands. The experiments were carried out in a pressure range of 2.0-12.0 MPa and in a temperature range of 27-40 °C. The data for CO 2 sorption in this polymer obtained by in situ spectroscopic methods have been compared to the data obtained by the gravimetric technique. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The phase behaviour of the binary mixture of carbon dioxide and the cobalt complex dicarbonyl(eta(5)-cyclopentadienyl)-cobalt, CPCo(CO)(2), has been investigated. This organometallic compound is one of the most effective catalysts of cyclotrimerization reactions of arylisocyanates and alkynes. Vapour-liquid equilibrium (VLE) measurements were undertaken in a static analytical apparatus at 313.15, 323.15 and 363.15 K at pressures up to 15 MPa. p, T isopleths were measured by a synthetic method in a Cailletet apparatus. Nine different compositions ranging from 17.56 to 94.23 mol% of CO2 were measured up to 15 MPa. Modelling with the Peng-Robinson equation of state (PR EOS) gave reasonable results in the correlation of the experimental phase equilibrium compositions using two temperature-dependent interaction parameters.
