Associate Professor (since 1999) of the Industrial Sociology in Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia (UNL), with habilitation for Full Professorship since 2001. Is coordinator of the PhD Programme on "Technology Assessment" (UNL) from 2009. Nowadays (since 2011) is also Invited Researcher of the Institute of Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Is coordinator of IET - CICS.NOVA unit at FCT-UNL on Innovation and Technology Studies since 2002 (from 2002 until 2012 it was only IET, from 2012 until 2014 it was integrated at CESNOVA, and from then joined with other centres to form the CICS.NOVA centre).
Sociologist, specialized in the Labour and Organizations domain (ISCTE, 1980), Sociology Assistant in Universidade dos Açores (1980-83) and in Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia (UNL) from 1983 to 1992, and has been Auxiliar Professor from 1992 to 1999.Was "Gastwissenschaftler" at the ITAS-Institute of Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis from Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe during 2007-08. Was also "Gastwissenschaftler" at the Fraunhofer Institut für Systemtechnik und Innovationsforschung (ISI-FhG, from 2002 to 2004), and "Visiting Researcher" in the Dept. of Portuguese-Brazilian Studies of Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island (1999).
Presented his dissertation for post-graduate studies (PAPCC, equivalent to M.A.) about "O Poder e o Discurso: a imprensa regional nos Açores" [Power and Discourse: the regional daily press in Azores] (Universidade dos Açores, 1983), and presented the Ph.D. thesis about the "Processos de Mudança Tecnológica e Organizacional na Indústria Portuguesa" [Processes of Technological and Organisational Changes in Portuguese Manufacturing Industry] (FCT-UNL), advised by Prof. Juan J. Castillo from Universidade Complutense de Madrid (1991).
In 2001 was unanimously approved in the aggregation/habilitation exams for the Sociology disciplines group. This exams were made on the newly proposed discipline of "Sociologia das Novas Tecnologias de Informação" and the lesson had the theme "A contribuição da Sociologia para a formação em Engenharia" (Contribution of Sociology to the Engineering education).
Was President (elected) of the Department of Social Applied Sciences of Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia (UNL), from 2001 until October 2007. Now is the responsible for the Industrial Sociology Section at the same Department.
