Environmental data is spatial by nature, owing to geographical and environmental agents that determine their spatial distribution. Some examples include the distribution pattern of a pollutant over a city, an estuary or coastline, the distribution of a contaminant in soil, the noise level in the surrounding area of an airport, the distribution pattern of a protected species or land use.
