Enzymes are being exploited within natural, hybrid and artificial systems in a wide range of fields, from environment, agriculture, pharmaceutics, food to chemical industries, among many, many others.
Our current fundamental and in-depth understanding of these fascinating proteins have enabled the development of INNOVATIVE, SUSTAINABLE AND ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY SOLUTIONS TO TACKLE MANY OF THE CHALLENGES HUMANKIND FACES, with special emphasis on climate change, carbon and nitrogen footprints and energy.
It is due time to put together a comprehensive account on the state-of-the-art of selected key systems that are promising biocatalysts for our future, aiming to inspire all those working in -or just interested in- the exciting fields.
That's why we got together a group of top researchers (see below) to help us compile a fifteen chapters Book (https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-030-58315-6 - Table of Contents here), where selected natural, hybrid and artificial systems are critically reviewed to highlight how enzymes are (or are not) living up to the expectations and poised to deliver their promises.
Included are: climate change, carbon footprint and economy and carbon dioxide utilisation; nitrogen footprint and fixation and nitrous oxide mitigation; hydrogen production, fuel cells and energy from bacteria; biomass transformation and added-value compounds production, as well as, biosensors development.
