Epik Games as Learning Activities

There are two key themes common to the development of games for education, namely:

  • The desire to harness the motivational power of games in order to ‘making learning fun’;
  • A belief that ‘learning through doing’ in games such as simulations offers a powerful learning tool.

Epik games have the following features:

  • Multi-player: the game is played by a group of students who may be in the same physical location or geographically distributed. This feature enables to develop collaborative games, which motivates the collaborative learning between the players;
  • Scenarios: the game is composed by a collection of scenarios, which are related through a flow scenarios that begins with the first scenario and ends on one of the last scenarios, all developed by user;
  • Scores: the game have usually scores associated to some players actions or to the players team.  Moreover, all the information about team  and player scores will be logged in LMS. This information can: (1) help teachers with the students evaluation, and (3) motivate students to learn through competition;
  • Teamwork awareness: throughout the game it will always be presented to each player the team score, all the other players scores and their respective avatars. This feature allows the player to perceive the surrounding environment, by having a perception of his actions and his colleagues, which motivates him to a greater participation in the teamwork.
