Ana Rita Xavier de Jesus Gameiro has completed her PhD in Organic Chemistry in December 2015 from University of Lisbon, in collaboration with the Eshelman School of Pharmacy and New York University at Abu Dhaby. She also obtained her MSc in Chemistry, Health and Nutrition in 2010 and her BSc in Chemistry in 2008 from the same University. From 2009 to 2016 she has was involved in many different research projects, most of them consisting in the synthesis of compounds with medicinal applications. During these projects she had the opportunity to attend different research groups from different universities, in different countries. In 2011 she attended Leiden University to perform NMR-based metabolomic studies with rat urine resulted from a in vivo study with a natural product synthesized during her master project. During her PhD studies she attended the Eshelman School of Pharmacy in Chapel Hill (USA) to perform chemoenzymatic synthesis of oligosaccharides derived from heparin. Later, she carried out all the biological studies of the compounds synthesized in Lisbon, at New York University in Abu Dhabi (UAE). Since 2017, she has acquired experience in high-pressure catalytic hydrogenations of dicarboxylic acids using ionic liquids and supercritical carbon dioxide, and on the development of new biocompatible ionic liquids as co-solvents to improve water-solubility of commercial poor water-soluble drugs. Currently, she is a Junior researcher at LAQV-NOVA and she is involved in different research projects. One, CryoDES project, which aims the development of new Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADES) as green alternative for the cryopreservation of mammalian cells. Also, using NADES as a new drug delivery systems for ocular applications. She also focused on the use of Deep eutectic systems (DES) as active solvents in the synthetic preparation of active pharmaceutical ingredients. Finally she also interested on studying the potential of NADES as new preservatives to improve the shelf-life of blood cells. During 2021 she participated in two entrepreneurship programmes, HiTech and HiEngine, to bring CryoDES to industry. From 2021-2023 she has supervised two undergraduate students, and one master student, and co-supervised one master student. Currently, she is supervising two master students and co-supervising one master student. She has been member of the advisory comittee of 3 PhD students. In 2023 she was invited to be member of the juri in a PhD defense from University of Alcalá (Spain). She has authored a total of 20 scientific papers, 3 book chapters, and 1 patent. She has a H-index of 10 (scopus). In 2021, she has been invited to join the reviewers board from Biomolecules Journal, and she has been invited to be the Guest Editor for the MDPI journals, for two special issues namely on "Advanced Research on Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents" and "Eutectic Solvents as Alternatives for Extracting Biologically Active Compounds from Marine Natural Products". Recently, she has been granted a CEEC (Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus) contract from Foundation for Science and Technology . Over the last years she has established several collaborations with national and international companies and institutions, within the biomedical, veterinary and cosmetics fields.
