A. Velhinho earned his Ph.D in Materials Science – Composite Materials – from Universidade Nova de Lisboa in 2004. His scientific activity delves on Functionally Graded Materials, being particularly focused in the development, modelling and characterization of innovative Functionally Graded Composites and Functionally Graded Cellular Materials. One particular technique which has been the subject of extensive work is microtomography, and its application to materials characterization, with a special interest in the processing and visualization of large tomographic datasets.

Teaching-wise, he is responsible for subjects covering Mechanical Behaviour of Materials, Composite Materials, Metallic Materials Processing Technologies and Materials and Processes Selection.
