Rogério Martins is an assistant professor at FCT NOVA and a research member of the Centre for Mathematics and Applications (CMA). He studies differential equations, dynamical systems, and recreational mathematics.
He has a consistent outreach activity, being the writer and presenter of the Portuguese TV show, Isto é matemática that was featured in the main Portuguese news channel SIC Notícias. Having a research background in mathematics, PhD in mathematics and more than fifteen years’ of research experience, being one of the ten finalists of the Famelab 2010 Portuguese edition boosted his activity in science communication for large audiences. The TV show he creates is in its 11th season, was widely internationally awarded, and shows the connections of mathematics to almost everything: from animal skin patterns, Drake’s formula, to the circadian rhythm.
Apart from that, in the last few years, he has presented four TEDx talks and developed and presented dozens of talks and science shows, to schools, teachers events, and the general public.
According to him, mathematics is more than a language: it’s the material from which scientific bridges are made.
