PhD on the Study of New Packaging Materials based on Cellulose Derivatives, April 2004 at Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCT NOVA), in the field of Materials Science, speciality in Macromolecular Materials. Since 2018, he is Associate Professor w/ Habilitation at Materials Science Department of FCT NOVA (DCM). He is also the Head of the DCM since November 2019. From 2008 to 2014 he was vice-director of the Materials Research Centre/Institute of Nanostructures, Nanomodeling and Nanofabrication - CENIMAT/I3N. He is the Coordinator of the Soft and Biofuntional Materials Group at CENIMAT/i3N and Responsible for the Biomaterials Reseach Line in this research group. He was coordinator of the MSc in Materials Engineering between 2010 and 2019. Editor of the journals: “International Journal of Chemoinformatics and Chemical Engineering”, "Annals of Materials Science & Engineering", "Annals of Organic and Inorganic Chemistry" and "Biofunctional Materials". Associate Editor of the journal "Frontiers in Biomaterials Science".

R&D activity focused on:

(1) biopolymers and biocomposites.

(2) polymeric liquid crystals (and its biomedical applications).

(3) the development and characterization of new biomaterials for Tissue Engineering based on polysaccharides (Chitin/Chitosan and Cellulose) or other biocompatible and biodegradable polymers.

(4) the development of magnetic Nanoparticles for cancer theranostics. Hyperthermia.

(5) electrospinning.
