PhD on the Study of New Packaging Materials based on Cellulose Derivatives, April 2004 at Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCT NOVA), in the field of Materials Science, speciality in Macromolecular Materials. Since 2023, he is Full Professor at Materials Science Department of FCT NOVA (DCM). He is also the Head of the DCM since November 2019 and vice-director of the Materials Research Centre/Institute of Nanostructures, Nanomodeling and Nanofabrication - CENIMAT/I3N. He is the Coordinator of the Soft and Biofuntional Materials Group at CENIMAT/i3N and Responsible for the Biomaterials Reseach Line in this research group. He was coordinator of the MSc in Materials Engineering between 2010 and 2019. Editor of the journals: “International Journal of Chemoinformatics and Chemical Engineering”, "Annals of Materials Science & Engineering", "Annals of Organic and Inorganic Chemistry" and "Biofunctional Materials". Associate Editor of the journal "Frontiers in Biomaterials Science".
R&D activity focused on:
(1) biopolymers and biocomposites.
(2) polymeric liquid crystals (and its biomedical applications).
(3) the development and characterization of new biomaterials for Tissue Engineering based on polysaccharides (Chitin/Chitosan and Cellulose) or other biocompatible and biodegradable polymers.
(4) the development of magnetic Nanoparticles for cancer theranostics. Hyperthermia.
(5) electrospinning.
